I'm an upholsterer by trade. Seat covers on older vehicles are generally held down by things called hog rings. Basically looks like nail in the shape of a C... At work a few hours before a show, I hog ringed my left index finger to a seat. Had to use dykes to cut the hog ring. That was painful. I super glued it. I always have super glue with spray hardener for various reasons hanging around including these. It actually wasn't so bad. I love super glue. Stings like no other when you use the hardener. But it's tough. Another story.... When my father was still an active drummer, he had a downtown festival show booked way in advance. He ended up going to a hospital for a kidney stones too large to pass. He had just had stints put in to help pass them. Fresh out of the hospital plays the show...He pulled it off though.jason

Agreed.. One time while doing the big rock n roll ending on the final song, and ripping into some triplets, i smacked my right hand knuckle right off the edge of my floor tom rim, followed by a warm, "wet" sensation.. After the final punch, my tom heads, jeans, and ride cymbal were all smothered in blood droplets and slashes. LoLoLoLo, and i had a nice chunk of knuckle flesh ripped out, only to realize afterwards that it was shaped like a heart ! LoLoLoLo. Now that's "loving" your job ;)

It worked well!! From what I understand, super glue was originally developed and intended for this purpose in the battlefield. How much of that is true, who knows? But I still use it to this day any time I wreck myself.lol

As I responded to in your previous "too sick to play" thread..... I did onetime play with my BD foot in plaster for over a month...

But on super glue.... I often split my left thumbnail straight up the middle.. (woodworking, pulling wires etc).. think it's some faultline thingo, been happening for round 20 years.. always the same spot. Whenever it happens I dob a few drops of super glue on the crack.. usually apply it every couple of days until the crack grows out...

i'm a cabinet maker installer, was trying to finish end of day, kind of took the side off my thumb shoving a piece of hardwood thru a table saw. I to cursed, wrapped it with a towel and tape headed to hospital. doc said were I planed the side off, nothing to stitch up. I could get a skin graph, but the area would be dead to feel, or wrap it up let it heal on its own. when he got done I had a bandage the size of a tennis ball on my thumb, told him that won't work as I needed to play that nite. he said you won't be playing for awhile. when home took it apart, put a piece of cloth and white tape on it. as I played the blood would seep thru, between songs I would give it a quick wipe with a cloth, it was a long nite, but even a bad nite of music is better than no music.

So you defied the doctor's order? You should be glad that there was no third party payer on this or you would be in a lawsuit.

Glad you were able to get through the gig - but not as glad about it as your bandmates!

When I read your story - boy, I could practically feel your pain! That must have hurt!! Hope you are ok now!

I have a friend - top 10% (of his class) graduate of PIT. Guess what he does for a living?

and yes - something similar happened to him. He tells me it was a long night with some powerful painkillers.

As they say....."the show must go on!"

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Reminds me of the legendary story about Buddy......finishing the gig, playing through a heart attack. Straight to the hospital after the last song, but it did not stop him from getting through the last song!

He sure was someone special.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

one more, I've been told this story a couple off times. Aubry Hanson had a small band in the early 60's playing barn dances and fair dates, nothing fancy, just upright bass and some strummers. on the road to a date in Gagetown aub's brother passes away, the story goes, they left him in the car, did the show, and took care of brother next day. may not be true, but would make a good country song. i'm told its true.

I worked as an offshore Charter Boat Captain for years and the mates used to use Super Glue to immediately seal up their numerous hand cuts that are part of the job. That's where I learned about it. Now they sell similar stuff in pharmacies.

Back on topic....I played with a broken wrist once. I also have "Drop Foot" which means I cannot lift my right foot. This means I either have to play "heel up" (which is not my style. or let the spring do the work returning the beater. I have adapted but it is definitely a handicap.

BTW, I have had 15 surgeries and have a "pain pump" installed in my body which pumps pain medicine around the clock. I cannot remember a time that I haven't had to push through pain to play.
