Any help identifying this drum set? What is it worth?

Loading...

I bought this kit from a woman who bought it in 1974 new, when she was 14. I am thinking it is a "Big Beat" or "Hollywood" kit.

She said the finish was "pearl" although it seems like the old catalogs call it "white marine". It has all the original hardware and all but one original batter heads. I searched high and low for a serial number and cannot find anything.

Thanks

Yes looks to be a white marine pearl set. If those stands are original to the set then it's a "Hollywood" set. Big Beat was exactly the same drums with heavier Atlas hardware.

Serial numbers would be on the lower panel of the badges but there were a couple of periods in the early 70's where the badges were missing the serial numbers. The serial numbers can give you a ballpark idea of when the drums were built but otherwise do not contain any sort of coded information.

If you look inside the drums there may be small ink stamps of the production date inside one or more of the drums if they date from the early 70s. These stamps weren't universally applied though and were easy to wipe away if someone cleaned the inside of the shells. The stamping was discontinued fairly early in the decade.

Looks like a very nice set. It's possible it could be older than 1974 as sometimes drums could sit in a music store's inventory for quite a while. They do look to fit that general time frame.

K.O. - Take a look at the badge closeup. I don't see a serial number, even a trace of one. That is where it should be, but it isn't......

Strobeboy123 - if you can, get a close up shot of all the badges, as well as the inside of the shell, opposite the badge.

I don't want to say the serial number looks scratched off, I'd have to see the others. But if that's the case.....I think we all know what I'm thinking.

There were some 70's Blue Olive Badge models without any serial numbers. I've got a snare or two like this and have seen some kits as well.

I wasn't aware they ever came without. At least that explains that. Hopefully there is a stamp inside one of the shell to help indicate a year.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
