I have just bought this snare drum with case snare stand brushes and sticks. It should be arriving soon from the USA. One main question..The strainer is one ive never seen before. The drum itself is pre serial. Would this be the strainer used in the 1950's. Ive tried looking through ludwig brochures in Drumarchive but cannot see a strainer like this. Any help is appreciated on this drum. I also have the rubber feet for WFL snare stand..........Thanks.......sean.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
I was going to say that these usually show up on drums with 1961 date stamps and I see that yours has one too. These were actually called the P85 Large Pioneer. One version is shown in '60 catalog and your version is shown in the '62 catalog. They have the same bolt pattern as the P83 but use a shorter throw arm. Neat strainers!

Thanks for the information guys. I noticed on mine it has the early WFL instead of the ludwig logo. Also is the muffler correct for year. Another cool feature is the original snare wires and drum heads.
cool drum. That's only the second time I've seen that version of the P85 Large strainer. The first time was this morning on the other forum. Also in England and on a silver sparkle Pioneer but with the Ludwig script logo. I have a 1960 Pioneer with another version of that strainer
You're right. Don't see too many of them. Pretty neat strainers. Ludwig using up odds and ends instead of letting them go to waste. I've got a '61 Galaxy Pioneer that has one. And I have a '60 Transition Badge duco Pioneer with that 3 point version.

This is the first time ive had the P85 strainer. Im sure there are lots out there, but as i say never seen WFL on one. Thanks to everyone who has given me the added info. The pioneer snare drums Fayray and Mlayton have are absolutely stunning. The round knob muffler/tone control is a cool feature before the baseball bat which i also love on these old ludwigs (gosh the styling was top class) How long was the round knob muffler in production before baseball bat muffler...........Thanks..sean
Usually start seeing the red felt bat mufflers in '63. The round knob mufflers reappeared again in '68.
