Early 70s Slingerlands Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I've finished for now, if ever finished, getting my Slingerlands into a good playable condition. Stripped and cleaned everything freed off a good few springs in lugs, all now ok. New Aquarian texture coated heads and a Superkick 1 on the bass, and she's sounding great. Obviously a few bits to replace, like wing nuts, 16" floor leg mounts, etc. but nothing stopping them being played. Black sparkle mellowed nicely to that root beer color. One question for you all, the bass drum hoops should have a silver inlay, correct?

I'll post some pics when I resize them to suit.

Beautiful kit! I have a similar Slingy. Different model but same wrap and it is early 70's. I believe that kit would have black sparkle inlay instead of the silver. Tough to find. I just went with the new black sparkle. Doesn't match up but looks pretty good. Love the sound of this kit! The kick is probably my fav kick sound of all my vintage drums.

Great looking kit! As skapunk said, the original inlays would be matching, not silver sparkle. Contact Precision Drum Company for some free samples of both Black and Gray glitter. The Gray Glitter may be closer to your "root beer" color.

They look mint. I really like Aquarian's line of heads, but I can never get them to fit on older kits. Did Aquarian increase the diameter of their texture coated heads?

I'm not sure, but they all fitted great. I did used to have a big size Slingerland a few years back, 26 15 18. from the 70s. I could hardly find any heads that would go on it! Not sure if the size of shells varied slightly.

I have 6 Slingerland bass drums. 5 have hoop inlays that match the wrap. The 6th has a teakwood veneer wrap and the hoops have chrome inlays.

I seem to recall that at some point Slingerland switched from matching inlays to chrome ones for everything. I'm not sure on the time frame though.
