This snare started life as a Concert tom. It was originally 14" round X 13" Deep. The shell had many extra holes drilled into the top and bottom portions. I took the shell to a custom drum builder and had the center undrilled portion of the tom cut out. We were able to get 4-1/2" out of the center but Lost a 1/4" after we trued up and cut new 45 degree baring edges. The shells depth is 4-1/4". Once that was done I bought the shell back to my place.
I wanted the snare to resemble in a way the 60's Ludwig Downbeat Piccolo and the late 60's Slingerland Piccolo that Buddy Rich used. But only Using period correct parts from the late 70's. So I hand measured, mapped out, and drilled the snare for 16 Small Classic Lugs in a off set position, like the Buddy Rich Slingerland piccolo. I went one lug down one lug up like the Downbeat piccolo. The Downbeat had single rectangular shaped lug with it one tension rod down and one up.
I then measured for the P-80 throw off and P-32 butt plate. If you look at the pics It may appear that the throw and butt are not centered. But they actually are. They are centered between the bottom lugs. If I had centered them between the top and bottom lug it would have thrown everything off and the snare wouldn't work properly. The Tone control and badge however are centered between a top and bottom lug.
Once all the measuring was done The shell was drilled out, then back to the custom drum builder for snare beds, then it was assembled.
The shell is round with No Cracks, Splits, or Ply separation. The outer ply is Mahogany and the inner ply is maple. The clear interior is original but has dulled a bit over the years. There also what looks like a dried glob of clear in one spot inside. Probably done at the factory. Nothing that effects the drum.
The white cortex wrap is the original wrap that was on it when it was a tom. The are no cracks in it and the wrap seem is tight. There are scratches, scuffs, dings, and lines in the wrap. But you can only see them if you are holding the drum right up to your face.
All of the hardware has been cleaned and polished. There are some Scratches, scuffs, and pitting on the vintage parts.
Drum heads are brand new. On top is a REMO Coated Ambassador. And on the bottom is a REMO Ambassador snare side.
Again the badge is the original pointed B/O Badge that was on it when it was a concert tom. The serial # again is 1940436. That puts this drum around 1979.
Video clip of snare. Sorry it's so dark. The lighting in the room was terrible.
