Long Term Storage for my Vintage Ludwigs?

Loading...

Hey Everyone! Haven't posted in a while, hope everyone is doing well.

--

I had been storing my 70 Downbeat (Oyster Blue) kit set up and good to go at my parents' where I could actually play them without any noise/neighbor issues. They changed their plans for the room and now I need to store them in my apartment. I picked up some Gator gig bags to protect them in a basic storage sort of way (I know they are not the thickest padding bags etc).

Was curious as to the best way to store/preserve them for a couple years.

First, they will always be in a climate controlled environment, and I learned here a while back about putting cardboard between the drums if I choose to stack the FT, bass, and tom.

Should I leave the bags unzipped a little bit for air movement? Can I store just the three shells stacked in their bags? I bought a basic cymbal bag (again, not heavy duty enough for touring, but for storage) too. Do vintage cymbals get bent by resting on their edge for extended periods of time?

Thanks again for your patience dealing with a guitarists' naivety regarding drums. :)

The cymbals will be fine stacked on their edges in a bag or case. Re the drums, for long time storage ... Toss a few bags of silica gel into the bags with them and replace those every six months or so... Maybe a wipe over all of the metal/chrome with a clean microfiber cloth at this interval too...

Cheers

John

A climate controlled environment is key. The drums should be fine in the cases. I live in San Diego & I am finding kits in SoCal that have been stored for decades in attics & garages. (There's really no basements in CA homes). Most finds have been in their original cases but some were just sitting in a garage covered, or in a closet. They are in just unbelievable shape due to the dryness of the air & lack of humidity. Perfect conditions really. So yours should be fine. The key is to keep it dry. Moisture is really the main culprit in long term storage issues. As a former NY'er I've seen what humidity & moisture can do to drums no matter where they were kept. Hope this helps.
