Just plain greed?

I need to vent about John Stebal, of Stebal Drums. I recently purchased a very nice 1961 Ludwig Super Classic snare drum and posted pictures for everyone to see. I was fortunate that the drum came with the original snare wires, but wanted to find a set of Puresound PLS-1614 as a spare. The only source for these wires appears to be Stebal Drums. John is selling them on Reverb and eBay. A set on Reverb sold for $65 plus $15 shipping. Original retail price was $59.95, so $65 wasn't too out of line. However, when I purchased my set, the price was up to $68. No big deal, only $3 more. After my purchase, there were only 4 sets left. I decided to check them out today and saw there are only 2 sets left and the asking price is $78 each! I understand supply/demand, but this just seems to border on how much $$ he can make off a limited product. John can certainly ask whatever he wants, but increasing the price each time a set sells just chaps my hide! As for the shipping price, I really felt $15 was a bit much, but after receiving the wires, and how they were packed, I have no complaints...even though John made about $3 on shipping!

OK, I'm done with my rant and feel better!

Personally I think the greed kicks off with Puresound themselves.. Their pricing structure is crazy...

Example (in AU) .. Their custom range retails at 38.99 ea regardless of size.. each of the "Vintage" range RRP are 79.99... again regardless of size... strands Etc.. Their prices do not reflect materials used and cost of manufacture IMO..

So is it greed or just market value? I bet you paid more than Ludwig's original 1961 retail price for that gorgeous Super Classic, and more than John paid for it. And, I bet the next guy to get it pays more than you did. Yep, the price keeps increasing each time it sells, so why would NOS Puresounds be any different? Puresound has discontinued all but a few sets of their vintage line, so their NOS snare sets will increase in value just as Ludwig's 1961 NOS snare sets have. You're absolutely right... supply/demand.

Not vintage drum related but along the same lines....currently in New Jersey for work, and travel the world, so my next statement is true in all the states/countries I have been. Checked in last night at a hotel, and staying three nights...why the H**L does it cost $149 for the first night, then $139 the second and $109 the third? Supply and demand for sure. Or why gas is now $3.19 a gallon at the last gas station near the airport (for rental car returns) Chaps me as well. Thieves
