Cutoff B/O Badge

Loading...

Hey guys,

I see that Ludwig trimmed the badges on beaded shells when the b/o badge first came out.

Where is the serial # located on early b/o Supras that have the bottom of the badge clipped off?

The serial # is on the badge after 1970 or so.

I don't know enough about Supras to speak knowledgeably so help me out here.

When did that clipped off b/o first appear? :)

There are no serial numbers on these drums when the badges were clipped. Even some of the full B/O badges from around 1970 have no serial numbers actually.

Nice Falling Do

I was talking to this guy who is trying to sell me one.

He said it was a 1968 model but I didn't think they hit the street quite that early.

I figured it could be a 69 or 70.

I just want to be sure of what I am looking at. :)

One thing to look for as an indicator of age is whether the badge has a "circle R" trademark registration symbol. The initial Blue/Olive badges did not have the "circle R" while after a few years, the "circle R" appeared.

From my research, the Blue/Olive badge did not appear until late 1969. The version with the Circle R did not appear until about 1972.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

They had to clip the new B/O badges so they'd fit on supra shells that had already been punched for the keystone badge. The company that made the shells punched the holes for all the hardware so there would be a backlog of shells with the earlier spacing waiting to be made into drums. The spacing over the bead was different between the two badge designs...so it's a transitional thing.

The clipped badge sometimes turns up on COB supra shells that were apparently produced around this same time so any clipped badge supra is worth deeper investigation, but probably 99+% of them are going to be aluminum.

Hey macr0w. I had a pleasant surprise on a cut badge super sensitive and found it to be COB. Look for a little 'B' stamp right above the muffler knob... you never know!

Not all of the trimmed blue/olive badge Supras from the early 70s are brass. Most are not. I don't know what the proportion is, maybe as low as 1 in a 1000. They are rare. But yes there definitely are some.

Hi my friend!

What I said about 70's B/O clipped badge was a "generalization".

According dictionary, generalization is a concept in the inductive sense of that word, or an extension of the concept to less-specific criteria..... ....So, definitely, it can be conclude that generalization is the "Arch-villain"of statistics!!Laughing HLaughing HLaughing HLaughing H

Seriously, I don't know either the proportion of 70's Clipped B/O badge = Brass..... 1/1000? I really dunno....

Nice point to a thread!!!Cool1 Let the real experts chime!!!

A warm greeting from a latitude companion!!
