Vintage Ludwig Rainbow Vistalites Last viewed: 3 days ago

Need some help identifying my kit from the Seventies. According to the research, I have a Ludwig "Rainbow" Vistalite Pattern "A" (Red, White, Blue) in the Quadra-Plus configuration (with concert-toms and original snare/stand). I have heard the names "Spirit of America", (Bi-Centennial) and "Barber Pole Vistalites" being used during my research if that rings a bell.

- 22" Bass s/n 1328521

- 14" Snare s/n 1329335

- 13" Tom s/n 1329804

- 14" Tom s/n 1328513

- 15" Tom s/n 1329806

- 16" Tom s/n 1329807

- 18" Floor Tom s/n 1329808

- Hi-Hat Ludwig Spur-Lok "New Beat"

Any information would help..

Welcome to the forum! From what you describe, it certainly sounds like a QuadraPlus to me! Here's a link to the QuadraPlus from the Ludwig 1975 catalog. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_sets/1975_ludwig_drumsets5.jpg

Pictures of your kit would be helpful.

Hey Mark, thank you.

Yes, I have this picture and I believe these are not the "Rainbow" type which were launched in 1975 in 6 different patterns. The kit on the picture predates the Rainbow type and launched in 1972. I will need to get some good shots to upload.

Rick Gier's Ludwig serial number dating guide points those serials in the '76 range.

Man that catalog page brings back memories. I swear I slept with that thing every night. As young teenager I dreamed about QuadraPluses.

I have the swirly, barber-pole version in a Down beat config.... (no matching snare though)

(edit- It's not a Down Beat. It's the remnants of a 5 pc [22, 16, 13, 12]).

Nice, these are the "Spiral" Rainbow Vistalite Pattern 'C'. There is also a 2-band "Swirl" pattern 'D' version. Very confusing!

Confusing indeed! Between all those patterns and all the available colors (both translucent and solid), the possibilities for custom-ordered Vistalites must have been endless. I can see why Vistalites have their own "cult" following. Is there any special, rare pattern or color combination that you Vistalite aficionados consider a "Holy Grail"? Just curious.
