Bass drum light

I think I want to stick a light in my 26" Radio King. Rather than go period correct (1947), I was thinking I'd do something using LEDs so there's no heat involved and with no permanent modifications to the drum.

My first thought was LED strip lighting (warm white in colour) and mount it off some plastic clips (or something similar) using the lug screws. It'd be nice to have it run off a battery to avoid trying to find a 240V plug. I'm thinking a might be able to get away with cutting a small hole in the batter head to allow me to run a cable and a switch back out to my side... that avoids me having to run a lead up through the vent at the top of the drum. Otherwise I guess it could all live internally and only get used when I'm playing with a ported front head.

Has anyone here done anything similar or had experiences with bass lamps/lights?

Cheers,

Cam

I've thought of doing this. Why don't you want to run the wires through the vent hole?

I've thought of doing this. Why don't you want to run the wires through the vent hole?

I don't want to have to wire it through the vent because I'll end up with a lighting unit inside the drum and a switch (and possibly 12V 7.2A battery) outside the drum with wiring running through the vent. The strip lighting is (obviously) too big to feed through the vent, the switch has no chance of fitting and I doubt inline snap-fit connectors will get though either... I don't want to have to cut the leads when I want/need to remove the light and re-wire and solder when I put it back.

That being said I'm thinking it might just be easiest to only use it when I'm playing a ported front head and just reach through the port... Then just hope you can't see the actual LEDs though the port. I'm just going to order the parts through work and have a shot, looks like it'll cost me about $50 in parts which isn't too bad.

Try an Led camping torch 5 bucks each.. Some flat ones come with magnet on the back... (2 AA batterys) seem to last forever)... if you want some flashing effect throw in a Led bicycle tail lamp... various flash patterns and you could remove/replace the red cover.. The latter will usually mount on a cymbal stand also...

Cheers

A little late here- but a few years back my guys wanted me to light the bass- I was in the same situation- not wanting to damage anything- so went to WalMart and bought a strip LED for car interior accent lighting ($19)/ it had a 'test switch' and battery box (small plastic box with disc batteries inside) ... I stuck it to a hard strip of plastic, mounted that strip under two lugs, ran the small wire (included) out through the vent hole with the switch and battery box sitting on top of the bass- worked great and after 2 years of playing the batteries still worked when I took it out- I didn't run it all the time of course- just flashed at opening songs and 'signature' numbers.... hope this gives an idea for a quick effect for you- JD

Now that has that era colour tone and looks great.Just need some palm trees or mountains as that yellow light bulb did the trick.Just watch out for mosquitos when playing an outside gig at night.Love the look of that lighting and so would the folks of the 30`s,40`s&50`s.Bass drum lighting is an artwork all to itself.

That's a great idea, maybe I'll grab another bass drum head and try my hand at painting a scene.

I'm pretty good with pencil drawings, paint is another story.

I've always liked the illuminated bass, and history behind it is very interesting. I did this a couple years ago. Installed a basic "40 watt on a stick" with a toggle switch and twisted cloth cord. 1920s Ludwig, 26x14. The drum had some issues, so I felt ok drilling two holes for this purpose.
