List your biggest Snare Drum disappointments Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Ok so as an antedote to the list your 10 fave snares. How about the ones that fell short.

My top one's are My Ludwig COBs.

60's Ludwig COB Super 5x14 Squelchy and a bit thin.

60's Ludwig COB SS 6.5x14 Sounded great in Maxwells. Ever since be dogged by a notey ring. Can't seem to tune it out.

70's Premier Heavy Rock Nine 9x14 I was expecting thunder, took it out on a gig and it was just so insignificant. No depth, no presence and just a bit hopeless.

00's Gretsch USA. 5x14 Sounded great in the shop. It's not that bad but since then its just sounded a bit thin and ringy. Always gets passed on sessions.

60's Gretsch RB 5.5x14 Definition of boxy. Came with a kit so just gets stored.

Obviously I've had many snares go through but they were the standout disappointments for me.

40's Slingerland Radio King WMP
60's Ludwig Downbeat Silver Spark
70's Ludwig Super Classic White Marine
60's Gretsch RB Champaigne Spark
70's Rogers Big R Black
90's Sonor Hilite (Red maple)
00's DW Collectors Broken Glass
00's DW Jazz Series Tangerine Glass
10's DW Collectors (Acrylic) Matt Black Wrap
10's PDP Concept Wood Hoop kit (Maple)

Not that i'm saying you don't know how to tune...But Iv'e had a couple of snares that I've hated for years on end and then magically stumbled across the right combination of tuning. I'm extremely picky when it comes to tuning drums. I have a ludwig acro that for probebly ten years now i've shelved. I keep going back to it and try this and that when it comes to tensioning. And then, I found it. The sweet spot. And now i'm impressed with it. For years now I thought it sucked and the supra was probably better. I just got a supra a few months back. I'm not that impressed with it.lol. The acro is way better! BUT, i'm not giving up on it. Just in case I stumble upon a sweet spot that I didn't know was there.

I would have to say as far as buildout quality control it's my LangPercussion. Don't misunderstand - the drum itself overall is magnificent and the hardware - especially the throwoff - is very good. However; some of the drilled holes in the shell were not accurate = misaligned - and there was some damage to the painted finish that looked to have been done when the hardware was installed. I sent the drum back after I noticed the misaligned holes and the holes were tweaked to fit the hardware. The drum was not repainted though. I mentioned that I would like to have another well known drum maker work on the drum. The person that build / put together my LangPercussion drum answered me by saying 'he would not like to have one of his drums out there that was less than perfect and would not sanction the drum builder I had in mind.' I shot an email back and said 'like the one I have now.? We came to an agreement that he'd build me another shell and paint it and put my existing hardware on it. I said that would be good. He said to ship him my drum then - I said no, I'm using it and I will ship it to him when he had my new shell ready. That was about a year ago.....and he has not answered my emails.

I am very disappointed not only by the lack of communication but the fact that this drum - that cost me nearly $2000 cdn (our dollar was higher back then) by the time it all washed out with shipping was not inspected closely before it was ever shipped to me.

As I said above - the overall design of the drums is superb. I love the drum but I'm very disappointed in how this is all washing out.

Here's the drum 7x14 3ply Tillman (Drummer's Dream) shell - LangPercussion buildout.

Can't really say much about disappointments, but if I had to point to one, it would be a DW Edge, 6 x 14 I once had. It was a cannon, heavy as a stone, and as much as I tried, could never find a sweet spot in it. I wrote it off as a snare drum with only one purpose; to play large venue, live shows.

As far as your ringy COB's, head combination, snare wires and tension, and any sort of muffling(moon gels usually work for me), even with the internal muffler on. Brass shells have a natural tendency to ring at higher tension of the top head. Typically you want the top head more loose than the bottom.

I haven't really had any bad experiences with snare drums, and as a matter of fact, i once had a gold sparkle 60's Bolero MIJ snare drum with re-rings that sounded superb..

But if i were to pick one, it would be a PDP 805 series popcorn snare drum..

This was certainly a one trick pony, only sounding decent when cranked to the max.

Snare bed was a piece of garbage, lacking sensitivity, and the color was butt ugly as well, a bright canary yellow with white hardware.. Yuk..

Wow kona, that is very disappointing for $2k. I would have sent it back to them to make it right. However, they should have stood by their quality and corrected their mistake at their expense.

The Ludwig brass editions 6 1/2x14", for what your paying and expecting, No thanks even though I've owned three of them now, Bought one new the other two were used from kits I was reselling. Myself and forum member kevins . We were doing a comparison between a new Ludwig alloy 402 and my vintage 402, there was a big sound difference between the two drums, Then I took the brass edition out for a comparison. It sounded no different than kevins new alloy 402, they all had the same heads and snare wires and tuned exactly alike using a tama tension watch for tuning. I don't care for the new Ludwig snare drums give me a up to the mid 80's no later. Now the vintage cob Ludwigs huge difference, but the new ones no thanks.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I completely surprised with the negative comments about the Ludwig COB's...

I'm not saying that it's not allowed to think that, or something by the way, just had not thought to find those babies on the list of "disenchantment" crying2-07crying2-07CryBaby

So am I and it was me that made them. But then that's my point. What a absolute disappointment. If you look on the 10 best list you'll see my 70's Black Beauty up there. I do love a bit of ludwig brass.
