Slingerland questions Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

Bought this kit yesterday and had a few questions. I have never seen a six lug snare with the clam shell hardware and the bass drum has tension rods that need a drum key. The guy at GC swears that the man who sold them this kit was the original owner, the drums were bought in 58-59, and have not been played in 40 plus years. Some of that makes sense as you can see the calf skin heads, but I cannot find out what kind of kit this is. Looks to be a 14x20, 9x13 and 5.5x14 snare. Any ideas?

Don't forget that special order drums were the norm back then. I have a Slingerland floor tom from about the same time period that is 14" wide and 16" deep.

Never play it the same way once.

The original T-handle tension rods are missing from the bass drum. I have had, and currently do have Slingerland and SlingerLeedy sets from tht era configured 14x20, 9x13, 16x16, matching wood snare. 16 deep x 14 across toms were available from a few manufacturers in the 50's and 60's. My Walberg and Auge 16x14 uses a Gretsch shell. People could order or buy their desired sizes and models of drums from a store's inventory. If someone wanted a six lug snare instead of the eight lugger pictured with drum set pictured in the catalog, he could get what he wanted. That's how I got my preferred configurations that differed from catalog pictures from Camco, Slingerland, and Rogers back in the 60's and 70's.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

That's a cool snare! No extra holes anywhere in it? If no and she's all original that's the first one I've seen like it. Is it a solid maple shell too? Please post some more pics when you can thanks.

Got the drums. The snare is all original with no extra holes. It has the mahogany with maple re-rings. The sizes are 12x20, 8x12 and 5.5x14. The wrap is in great shape. I really don't know what to make of the kit. It almost looks like a kids drum set but done really well. Calf skin heads on all drums. The bass drum heads say Radio King.

I think I may have figured it out. I'll have to double check the size of the snare drum, but it appears to be the 2N Jobbing kit listed in the 1959 Slingerland catalog. I also posted a picture from the 1955 catalog which is my kit right down to the double cymbals and cowbell. See pics below. It even has the clam shell hardware in the ad. If my snare is a 13, then I'll know for sure. Hell, even the weird looking tom holder on my drum is correct per the ad. In addition, it came with the correct hi hat stand and snare stand. It turns out that the tension rods are correct as well. I found another 2n Jobbing kit on the internet and it had the drum key style bass drum tension rods. What would a fair market value be on this kit? I cannot find one comparable anywhere.

Good detective work there! I never noticed the 6 lugger 13" with clamshell. Learn something new everyday here. Very cool.

I recently discovered the link ( is that the right word) for all those slingerland catalogues, where you can read each page .It is a very interesting read. The one I had as a kid was the 77 catalogue.

Here are three more pictures. One of the hi hat stand, Camco foot pedal and snare. Pretty cool kit now that I know it is pretty much just like the catalog picture. It is missing one cymbal arm, the wood block and the foot pedal is Camco. I'm pretty excited to re-skin these and hear them in all there glory. The wrap is 9 out of ten.
