Head Suggestions? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

Just started playing my '70s Vistalites again, but this time around I am using my 12"x15" Vistalite Parade snare as my primary snare. (just to be different) Since it is so huge, I am trying to get a real deep, gooshy, Zep-ish, kind of sound out of it. I have a '70s Acrolite that I'm using as a side snare.

My problem is that the parade drum is too quiet.

Any suggestions of head combos and strainers, for making it louder?

"Loud" would be CS Black Dot, also keeping the Vista tradition of transparency .. Fairly loose snare wires.. (not too tightly choked..Just enough for a secure vibration..Bottom head much tighter than batter head, with batter head at medium range..You will get a louder snare sound than Michael Lee had when he toured with Plant/Page back in '94..Lee used a Classic Maple Marching snare drum, tuned insanely tight, and if you ask me, it sounded too much like a parade drum, with that annoying "tack"..But it still sounded great with the music.. Peter Criss on kiss Alive II had a Pearl Marching snare which really kicked some serious bottom end, with a punchy batter head sound like a 4" wide leather whip slapping a wine barrel..:)Sumo Dude

Hope this helps..

Thanks, guys. I'm definitely going to go with a 42 strand setup and a very thin bottom head, since the drum is so deep. I assume you were talking about the "concert snare side ambassador" that is 3 mil and not the regular ambassador that is 7 mil. Everything I've been able to find online points to the 2 and 3 mil bottom heads for deep drums to get more projection and sensitivity since the air has to move so far to get to it.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Yes the snare side ambassador head not a batter ambassador head. Do you have a snare stand that will go low enough for this depth of a snare drum ?

Why not a diplomat snare side head? Even thinner.

Yes, I've been looking at both.

Yes, I've been building various types of racks and cages for about 20 years or so. This is the beginning of what I'm doing for this kit.

It's kind of hard to see what I'm doing in this pic, but you'll get the idea. I'd be happy to post more pics as I move forward. (maybe in a different thread)

Ok cool, I took a snare stand and modified it by first removing the leg support then cutting down the post with a pipe cutter then re-installed the leg support, It simply made it much shorter.

Yeah, I had to cut about 4 inches off of the top post that connects to the basket.

Yeah that's what it looked to be. You'd think a company would offer a stand for deeper snares past 8" depth.
