Rogers Wood Dynasonic #19541

Loading...

I just acquired a Rogers wood Dynasonic and have concerns that it might be a fake. My concern is with the re-rings which are 6 ply, not 5. I have attached some pictures including a close up of the bearing edge and hopefully someone can verify if it's real or a fake. I can attach additional pictures if that would help.

Welcome to the forum!

Based on what I see, the drum/shell looks original. Wood-shell Dynasonics are relatively rare and sound great.

I would say that drum has at leased to be a re-wrap. grommet looks wrong to me/ what is under the wrap by the bearing edges?

The wrap looks like is has shrunken by the bearing edge. I've seen this on other Rogers drums. Although the wrap is not right by the bearing edge, it follows all the contours along the edge exactly. The grommet looks like my other Rogers drums and other dynasonics from 1969 that I've seen. The one thing that does not look right to me is the 6 ply ring. The shell itself is 5 ply. Perhaps Keller deviated from the normal formula?

The best way to tell if its a real Dyna would be to take the bottom head off and set the shell on a perfectly flat and level surface. Then look to see how much of a gap is there where the snare beds would be. If there is no appreciable gap, then its the real deal, although it does appear to have been re-wrapped at some point. If it has a deep snare bed, it probably still is a Rogers shell, but maybe a converted Holiday or Powertone shell. Either way, its still a nice looking and sounding drum.

It appears to be very original, and I only count 5 plies in the reinforcing ring. I've understood from some, including videos provided on line, that the reinforcing ring is supposed to be 3-ply, but I've heard 5-ply elsewhere too. This is a rather good example from which to detect the rings, because there is a slight separation at the scarf joint. I see 5 distinct plies up to the point where the separation ends. The grommet should be chrome, and it is, not polished aluminum like the ones available today. If someone else has an original in a sparkle finish, please check it on behalf of MarkIT57, but my experience indicates that glass glitter cannot be trimmed in the same fashion as the other wraps. It ends up being cut, or it simply frays if you attempt to file it to the outer edge of the drum. Thus it is not beveled to the shell.

Notwithstanding all of the above, I hereby declare it a fake so Mark will sell it to me cheap.

The drum has very shallow snare beds, about 4 inches wide and 1/32" deep. The edge of the wrap is beveled and looks like it would match up with the bearing edge, like is had shrunken some now. I count 6 plys on the ring, from the outer to inner the color is light, dark, light, dark, dark, light. The inner most ply is much thinner than the others. I found a picture with a Dayton era drum with a grommet that looks very much like the one on my drum.

From Ludwig-dude

it probably still is a Rogers shell, but maybe a converted Holiday or Powertone shell. Either way, its still a nice looking and sounding drum.

Being 8 lugs vs 10 lugs, making a Dyna from another used shell would be pretty obvious.

My 67 Dyna has the seam in the same location.

+1 on Ploughman`s anology. There are way too many crooks out there with amazing altering skills. Not saying the seller is, but buyer beware esp. when you`re talking a drum of this caliber and exp.
