Current state of vintage drum prices?

I'm looking at the market in ATL and there seems to nothing of interest. And I'm about to kick off another campaign. Ya'll wanna help?

In my market I am seeing insane prices a lot of the times for not so desirable drum kit.

Asking prices? Or completed sale prices?

I certainly see lots of way over the top asking prices. But I see very few way over the top completed sales. That's based on tracking sales of 6Paiste 602 and Sound Creations continuously since 2006, and back in the early days of data collection I did Acros and Supras to get some sort of "baseline". And I have Ludwig Jazzette prices from back then versus later years.

The market remains "volatile" as they say in the share market bizz.

I agree with the observation that top quality collectible drums and cymbals did a better job of maintaining prices after the GFC hit. Your basic acro or supra took a hit. Your 1920s-30s engraved black beauty may have slipped back a little and since recovered. Old Stamp (pre 60s) Istanbul Ks stopped their relentless rise but have made a comeback. The more common Intermediate and New Stamp Istanbul Ks, not so much. But individual sales vary a lot which is why you need plenty of data to see the pattern. Hence my data collection work.

Markets are always volatile in any commodity,but one thing is for sure...high quality/vintage collectables in any field of collecting will always command top dollar and a premium in the eye of one who wants perfection.Lower condition and not so rare items will always be at a more volitile disadvantage.

Im holding on to my 65 drum sets. I won't be selling them for less of what I think they're worth. I'd say many people is doing the same and thats why theres nothing to buy unless you want to pay through the nose. Only two years ago I was buying two or even three sets a week. This year Ive only bought one so far…In the whole year!

The flippers and strippers drive up the costs because it is a speculative market. I think the deals are in basements and attics and the repair and restore tips here are great to get a drum back to playing music rather than collecting dust.

I agree entirely. Fortunately, I don't do this for a living so I only buy what I like. Down here in Middle Earth, the supply of good quality vintage (US) drums is limited which tends to skew the market considerably and make uninformed vendors ask for unrealistic prices. Unlike you guys, we don't have the luxury of CL (The musical instrument section in CL Auckland currently lists one - yes that's one, instrument) or decent pawn shops/estate sales etc. to satisfy our drum-related needs.

God, how I hate those flippers & strippers!

I dont really know what Im gonna do with them to be honest...There was a time when i didnt have kids and my hobby was to look for drums and they were popping everywhere. I left the Bay area with 37 sets. My garage was full of them! I couldn't park my car in the garage anymore! Then I moved to LA and slowly but surely the collection grew. Boy! There was a time like 4 years ago when I was buying three sets a week! I was checking CL from 7 am to 12 pm...Inland empire was my promised land! I brought at least 15 sets home from there! Camcos, Gretsches, Ludwigs...Everything...Once I brought 6 sets home at once!!!! The guy was moving and he had to get rid of most of his stuff. I responded only 15 minutes after he posted on CL! I was there and hour later. Man! He had everything! Guitars, Basses, Keyboards, amps,drums!!!! I bought two Luddies a Gretsch a Slingy and two MIJS...Man, I should have bought some of his guitars!...Oh my goodness...THOSE were the times! Ive sold some of them during all these years and theres a couple that I still miss like hell...Im not good at selling them. Just buying them!

I understand ( as well as most members do) the addiction of watching CL and waiting for a good deal to pop up. After 15 kits I still watch and check CL about every hour, even if I don't have the money ready. At first I thought I would flip the kits and make a few extra beer bucks but I end up falling in love with them and keep them, they are just so dang cool.
