I was thinking of trying a die cast rim on the batter of my Dayton 16" fl tom as it tends to go out of tune now and then requiring tweaking every so often - also like the sound - wondered if anyone tried this and what brand of die cast hoops might be best for this application.
Also, wondered if swapping out the stock washers for those white nylon ones some use might be helpful - any insights very appreciated!
I use the nylon washers underneath the originals. Geez I wouldn't mess with a Rogers floor tom if I had one, but I guess, the heavier the rim = the more choked.

My Walberg & Auge set that came with Rogers shells and hardware and Gretsch die cast hoops sounded very boxy. With Rogers hoops, it sounded like Rogers drums should sound. My other W&A set with Gretsch shells, hardware, and hoops sounds quite a bit better (less boxy) than the Rogers shells with die cast hoops. My conclusion is that that the Rogers drums with Gretsch die cast hoops produce "That not so great Gretsch sound".
Maybe it's the combination of die cast rims with thin shells and _no_ re-rings that makes the Gretsch sound work. So when you put em on a Rogers, with re-rings, it's too much choking.....just guessing here. :)

Damn good guess........in my opinion.
Appreciate the advice - my rogers tom which I had the bearing edges re-cut is so much better than before in even timbre and tunability - I may be being bit picky - I think it may be my playing as well as it seems the lugs closest to me, need the tweak now and then from hitting at times on the heavy side possibly - cheers all.

Yeah I'll bet that drum sings. I'd try the washers anyway, might be all you need. I try to have them on all snares and toms. You can feel the difference when tuning - smoother.

It could also be the lug insert or tension rod (or both) just getting played out from years of service. You can mark the tension rod with something (whiteout-tape-marker) and see if it moves/comes loose after a bit of playing. If so you can swap the insert/lug and tension rod with one from the reso side. This might correct the problem.
Have you tried the Yamaha aluminum cast hoops? They cost a little more than a Gibraltar or Pearl cast hoop, but they're also lighter and I think they choke less.
