Ludwig Classic Psychedelic Red (197XXX??) in pristine shape - HELP DATE / VALUE Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hello everyone,

I have just purchased in my home country of Portugal a Ludwig Classic Psychedelic Red from the 1970's. The kit is in pristine shape for a kit of this age; the wood, finish / wrap, lugs, and everything seems to be original. The guy who sold it to me supposedly inherited it from his drum teacher, a famous brazilian drummer called Pascoal Meirelles - http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascoal_Meirelles . I can't attest if this is true or not, but truth is that the kit was kept with a lot of love and care for over at least 35 years.

I have some doubts about its value and date. if someone could help me i would be much appreciated. Here are some pics :

First off, sizes are 22" kick, 16" floor and 13" tom.

Serial ## are :

Kick - 1005134

13" - 974702

16" - 1004715

Both the 13" and the 16" have reinforcement rings as you can see in the picture here.

The inside shell is similar between these two. The kick drum though has a different inside shell and i believe it might be more recent. I am not sure about what i am saying, because looking at the Serial numbers kit should be from 1976, but if that is the case it shouldn't have reinforcement rings like it does. HEre is the inside of the kick :

Also, 1970's Ludwig cases and skins (!!!) are included, only the top for the skins, as the bottom have a hole at least 8/10". I was told by a friend that this hole was made to have the skin on and preserve the lugs, and rim but maintain the sound of the drum without skin. Like i said the owner of these drums really cared for them.

The only other thing is that this finish (psychedelic red) seems to be rare; i onnly came across a few of these online and they normally go for high prices. Can someone give me an estimate of how much this kit would be worth today??

Thanks a lot in advance,

Afonso

The kit was probably made around 1973-4. It probably came with two toms and a floor tom. The bass drum appears to have a mahogany interior, unusual but not unknown to happen back then. They used whatever wood they had on hand. The green in the finish will fade out when left in sunlight for a few months so keep them covered or in cases. Value depends on scratches and color fade. 1,000-1,500 $US perhaps more?

Thanks BEC, my guess from what i read / seen around is that the kick was mahogany, but i thought they always made matching shells with the rest. So everything is 3 ply right? If it was 6 ply it didn't have re-rings. The colors seem to me as original, no fade whatsoever.

Actually they would mix and match shells of various wood content as needed. As Bun mentioned they would use the woods they had on hand (the fat center ply was always poplar and the outer ply was almost always mahogany but the inside ply might be either maple or mahogany and "factory" sets didn't necessarily all have the same.

Yes anything with re-rings would be a 3 ply shell. 6 Ply came out late in the 70's (78) as that color was being discontinued and there are very few (if any) Psych red drums with 6 ply shells (although a few might exist).

Looks like a very cool set. Keep that green out of the sun/UV.

I`m with Heraldo,...Holy Sh*t !!

That wrap usually got covered over because it didn`t sell well, but today, you can`t put a price on it in that condition.

Keep the sun out, you`ll have red white and blue drums soon if you don`t.

Great find.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

thanks for your comments everyone. i am a drummer and not a collector, so i will play it a lot and think twice about not gigging it, as this kit must be seen as much as it must be heard. it has kind of a virgin felling to it, being that the guy who owned it for most of his life only used brushes (hence the original skins that are still there); so i can't wait to tune it and play it.
