Mismatched Set WFL sizes Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Hi,

I'm piecing together a WFL set in WMP, late 40's / early 50's. All drums have the same badges and same WMP. However, the bass drum is 14x20, rack tom is 9x13 and snare is 7x14. (no floor tom yet) I had to have the 20" bass drum even though the 13" tom belongs with a 22", 13", 16" set. Have you guys ever pieced together drum sets with matching badges and finish, but without paying attention to sizes? I'm not a fan of 22" bass drum. I got the 20". I'd like an 18", but I don't think there were too many, if any 18" WFL bass drums. A 20" is rare as is so I had to have it when I saw it. I've never seen a WFL 12" rack tom, so I'm wondering did these 20" bass drums come with a 13" rack tom? There is a rail consolete which is factory installed so I am assuming it came with rack tom. I've also never seen a 14" WFL floor tom. Any information would be great!

Thanking you in advance.

I'm no LW guy but the 49 catalog shows a 8x12 for $48.50 among other sizes. Both pearl and painted finishes. Didn't see a 14x14 but there was a 12x14 whcih I'd guess was still a mounted tom size then. I didn't look at all the catalogs so you might see something in the 50's cats. Check out the Drum Guide here there's a zillion Ludwig catalog scans. Bet your WFL's sound fantastic too. Do they have mahogany interiors?

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Thanks for the information. I just noticed the Super Classic bass drum and tom sizes in the catalogs, but wondering if there was a 12,14,20 outfit or were these drums sold as individual drums? Either way, I'm happy with the 13" tom as a rack tom. :)

Chromeo - Think about adding a 12"x15" converted marcher floor tom! Great drums, the size gives them some real balls. I have calf heads on mine and it rumbles and growls. It'll go good with the 13"/20" combination. You can get a good spread on the toms.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks John, that's a great idea! Do you think they had those marchers with the classic lugs? I am seeing one of eBay in WMP that's a 12x17? 17 being the diameter. Seems like an oddball size, but it has the bow tie lugs and long Ts. I'll keep an eye on the marchers. I have a hoop mounted tom mount that I could possibly mount a floor tom to and use the rail consolete for the rack tom. I'm still waiting on the drums to arrive. I should have the rack tom and bass drum during the week. The snare I have ordered over a month ago and it's still not here. Canada post 4-6 weeks to get across the pond. I believe they put it on a raft and pushed it out to sea. :D

It'll get there, bud. Same deal from US to Canada and there is no body of water between us other than the Great Lakes. The hand-off from system to system is F'ked!

The 15" was just a suggestion. WMP marchers from the era do come up and they make excellent floor toms. Ask Mike Layton, he's a huge fan of 15"s. Me too! They sound great. Good luck with whatever you choose to go with. The 17" seems a bit out of place size-wise to me. 14", 15", even 16" is a better fit. The kit that Jeff veneered for me (all WFL orphan shells, the kit in the jingle-stick video that you complimented me on,) is 13", 15", 22". The sizes work. The only difference in your set-up would be the 20".

Cheers John, you had me at 15" floor tom! That sounds like a great idea! I'll be keeping an eye out for one. I'll put some photos up of the set when I have it pieced together.
