"Birdman" Drummer

Loading...

A couple of days ago, I watched "Birdman" and was quite impressed with the drumming of the mysterious musician playing the score. I googled a bit and found out that it was jazz drummer, Antonio Sanchez.I don't know much about jazz drumming but, thought Mr. Sanchez was very fast with his sticks! One site however, maintained that there was a lot of over dubbing involved. I know that "googling" is not the definitive answer to anything but, thought that some of you jazz buffs could shed a bit of light on the performance. Just curious. Thank you.

He plays with Pat Metheny. Here's some background on him in the movie:

Yes, in the scene where they are walking past him on the street he seems to be short some drums or cymbals, can't remember exactly but overdubs are likely...

My two cents.

From vintagemore2000

Here is a video of him with Metheny. PAT METHENY ANTONIO SANCHEZ CHRI MC BRIDE - YouTube

Wow! What a great demonstration of technical ability, but aside from his phenomenal tech skills, that video also shows what a great "listener" he is. He responds so perfectly to what's going on. I guess that’s what separates a true master of improvisation from the spotlight hogs who just want to “solo” through an entire jazz piece (saw too many of those guys in college). Thanks for posting that video!

Well, Hollywood gave us drummers two fantastic movies this year with both Whiplash and Birdman, although I personally found JK Simmons’ portrayal of a maniacal music professor much more satisfying than Michael Keaton’s depressive depiction of a washed-up, suicidal actor. Just my:2Cents:

I loved Whiplash. It reminded me of experiences I've had growing up as a Drummer(many moons ago) amongst older semi/ex/Pro players in Big Bands and function bands etc. I've had some right boll-ok-ings over the years. Oh the lost pad, and the forgotten sticks!! Argh!

Brian - I got to hear Antonio play with Pat at the Beacon Theater in New York. A close fiend of mine, Greg Sandow had written a review of Metheny's upcoming album for the New York Times and Metheny had provided him with Backstage passes for himself - and a guest! Guess who the guest was? It was a wonderful evening and I got to meet everybody back stage with Greg.

AMAZING drummer! The cat uses his cymbals more than any other drummer I've seen. He's good on them too! There was one tune they played where he rocked the whole thing out on the cymbals. Speaking as a drummer, for me it was an incredible thing to see and hear. Very -musical- drummer, melodic player.

Whiplash had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Simmons was intense as the professor. A couple of times I just wanted to reach through the screen and kick his as$. He really inhabited that character and sold the part. Great flick, and emotional roller coaster ride. What I didn't get was that little look they gave each other at the end of the movie. I still would have shoved my sticks into his nether regions even if the kid did save the day for himself.
