drum beat practice cassettes Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

Does anyone know where to get cassettes that have different drum beats to practice to. I'm feeling kind of stale and would like to learn some up to date innovated stuff. My style is Rock and Funk but I'm boring myself with the same old stuff that I know. I'd like to expand my repetoire. Thaks, Louis.

+1 on the youtube suggestions. Here's a good one [clip below], funnest thing I ever learned [so far]. I'd skip straight to 5:45 for the slow version of the beat, start from the beginning if it don't sink in quick...

Mitch - That's a Linear groove! I was trying to turn some of the guys here on to Linear drumming. Gadd's 50 Ways groove is a Linear drum groove, I use Linear fills all the time. Great sounding groove that Songa. I'm going to check it out.

Yep it's linear, and like I said the most fun thing I've learned in all my drumming days, so fun to play, while also being pretty simple once you get the feel. Now, the instructor adds toms in non-linear ways, but I ain't there yet!

For anyone who's not hip to linear yet, it just means each note/beat gets one drum/cymbal, no doubling, for instance you don't hit the kick and hihat at the same time. Perhaps common knowledge but I had to look it up meself not a couple years ago...:)

I've posted this one before, it's one my favorite Stanton Moore grooves. All of it based on a single sticking pattern. If you want to mess around with an interesting groove, try this one. It's just FUN to play. Makes you 'feel good' while you're doing it.

That's a good one! Doesn't hurt when the drums in the instructional clip sound that good either...!

Watch the video again closely! Click the little box in the lower right of the You Tube window and open up the video full-screen. Stanton does a trick that really grabs your ears when you hear it, he has a second LARGE bass drum set-up off to his right. When the sound of the groove he's playing sounds like it 'opened up' and suddenly gets bigger and deeper, is when he switches from the kits bass drum pedal to the Big-Boomer off to the right. You can see the beater start to move when you hear the sound open up. Listen again and this time watch that big red bass drum off to his right side, when you see that beater start going, the sound of the drums gets real BIG! Neat 'sonic' trick!
