Missed my Satin Flame Gretsch Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I recently was bidding on a Sunset Satin Flame 4 pc Rock kit (20/12/12/16 no snare). The seller ended the auction stating they were no longer available. He emailed me to say he sold them to a local drummer friend. I was let down but I also understood.

I have since emailed him with the offer of two shellpacks FREE SHIPPING to the USA (I'm in Canada) for the Satin Flame drums (shellpack) and if he could please pass this on to his drummer friend or whomever has the drums now - I don't care I just want the drums.

In my mind it's a smoking deal for the person that has the Satin Flame drums. But, that's 'in my mind' - what do you think? Is my offer just fishing or is it an exceptional deal. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. In my case the Satin Flame drums are almost identical to my very first Gretsch kit I bought new in 1969. So it's sentimental and nostalgic and I don't mind trading two shellpacks for one. If the new owner likes vintage Gretsch drums and does not have a sentimental attachment to the Satin Flame drums - I'd go for my deal if I was him.

I have these drums for sale right now at $2500usd for the Orange ones and $2400 for the Green ones. I know that's high for today's market for these drums. I'd probably take a lot less for a good solid offer. I think both shellpacks would fetch up to $1500 or more just parted out over time.....I've done the math.

I'm just venting a little here so go easy on me.

What kind of deal do you think my offer is - and should I offer Cash on top of the two shellpacks and free shipping? I hate to see this one get away on me that's all I'm thinking.

I also was hoping the buyer of the Satin Flame drums is a member here and will take pity on me .........

Here's my two shellpacks - they've been shown on here a few times.

Thanks guys. The first photo here is what was on the eBay auction until it was ended by the seller a day or so before its completion.

Second photo is me on my 69 Sunset Satin Flame in 72 - the bass drum near hats is from my very first kit (MIJ) in 65. I bought them new in 69. The eBay drums are 68. Gretsch offered them from 68-70. They weren't listed in any of the catalogs. The 68 Gretsch catalog mentions the finish - but no photo or Color Swatch. The finish was reintroduced in 1992 as Pink Flame (I like Sunset Satin Flame myself). Some call it Salmon Satin Flame.

The eBay kit floor tom does not have Factory legs - that was disclosed in the auction. The bd spurs are not Factory as well. But that's a very small detail to me.

I'm no wheeler-dealer but your two sets seem intensely amazing and special, so I'd say done deal except for the fact I want to *eat* the satin flame drums in the first picture. No wonder you want em!

If this were a movie it would be called "A Very Interesting Proposition"...and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I don't really think there is much hope in the deal as the former seller has not even replied to my emails. I Think my initial knee-jerk reaction (to give what it takes to get the drums) is wearing off as the hours pass. I put the two shellpacks on eBay - start date 17th. I put the price at $3000usd plus free shipping for both shellpacks. It will be interesting to see if that rattles the cages and a collector/player maybe will buy them. It's a 'bundled' deal. I think the lowest I would go for an individual sale would be $1700usd with Free Shipping maybe. I'd have to think about that. They're both nice shellpacks and if I was looking for either one I would have to look pretty hard to get a similar deal. Since they are Orphaned drums it would be easy (guilt-free) to apply any finish to the shells and end up with whatever you like without spending a fortune.

That makes sense. A certain initial panic fades to acceptance, I've felt that...

How often do you see the Satin Flame kits? I mean there has to be more than one :) Another comes along and you can get it without trading *two* gorgeous kits...

Surely not the Green ones? Those are orphans?

Yes - green ones and orange ones - both orphaned drums.

UPDATE:

I got an email from the seller today and he's sold his drummer friend a different Satin Flame kit so the Sunset Satin Flame drums are available to me now.

He didn't quote a price in both his emails today - other than to state he prefers a cash purchase. I'm good with that but I'm a little nervous why he hasn't stated a price. I was going to do a bank to bank eTransfer of funds but Canadian banks are not set up for anything other than eTransfers within Canada. I guess Western Union or Paypal are the options.

The drama continues..................

THE LATEST UPDATE:

The drums are mine!

They will be sent out to me next week - Monday or so.

It was a complicated (mostly from my end) process.

It turns out that the seller has another Satin Flame kit and his drummer friend has agreed to take them so the that freed up the Sunsets for me.

I have both my Orphaned drum shellpacks on eBay right now for $3400usd.

I WOULD BE WILLING TO SELL BOTH SHELLPACKS FOR

$2400usd - that's $1000 less than what I have them listed for.

At this low price I would pay 1/2 the shipping cost. I think each kit would be about $250 from Canada to the USA. At any rate the cost for a buyer of both shellpacks would be $2650usd. Parted out they would bring much more than that alone. I need to sell both shellpacks to finance this deal

So - spread the word please.

These are nice drums at $1200usd per shellpack

thanks, Gary
