I'm buying a 40's Radio King set!

Yep I'm getting a big ole RK with a 26" bass drum! Also with 13 and 16 toms.

Question. Should I use hoop mounted Spurs? Or drill in new ones?? Many of the RK's Ive seen online over the years are drilled with modern spur brackets.

Although the kit will be a studio kit, I'm a bit worried about the stress hoop mounted spurs will put on that front hoop.

Any of you guys have first hand experience of this??

Congrats on scoring a superb drum kit! You make me feel guilty, I have an RK kit sitting in a stack waiting to be restored. I just haven't gotten around to it yet and I wouldn't have any room for it if it was all together any way... I'll get it together sooner or later.

Re: the spurs... are they keepers? If you don't plan on selling the kit, they are -your- drums! Set them up any way you like. Although some consider altering a vintage drum a sin beyond forgiving, drummers have been customizing their own kits since the beginning of drum kits. Don't allow anyone to make you feel guilty about setting up a set of drums the way -you- like them. Whatever works best for you...

Well the kit will be 3rd hand to me. The first owner back in the day had a heat lamp inside the bass drum so he figured the neatest way to get the power lead in was through the air vent, so he fitted 50's slingy spur mounts so the bass drum was upside down! The second owner lost those spurs that fit the brackets but the brackets are still on the drum. I could use those if I get repro's made, or can find some. But I like the badge being on top.

BTW the kit comes complete with original calf skins on!! Ooooh. I'm getting the kit from Mark at Rusty Drums who's selling them on behalf of the owner through his website. Here's a link to the flickr pic's mark has of them.

Jim, I don't intend that kit to go anywhere till I croak.

Any advice on how to treat the WMP wrap to bring out the yellowing? Or are they set now?

the light buld cord routed through the vent hole was a factory trick one of my bass drums from my double bass 28' Kit came that way. I am one of those that gets bent out of shape to see old vintage drums altered, the clip on spurs work very very well, and I am a hard hitter both feet and hands I've had not problem one with any of my clamp on bass drums.

Congrats those are beautiful. Your going to love the sound so warm!!! The mellow WMP looks great I wouldn't do a thing other than the normal clean and polish. Soooooo nice!! Do try to find a nice Radio King snare. Solid maple of course!! Unless you already have one then nevermind. :D

Me neither, been using these little guys [pic] for a few years now with no BD creep, no hoop issues. They are awesome!

...and so is the kit you are buying!
