Factory flaws Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I'm curious to know if anyone owns or has owned a vintage Ludwig snare drum that came from the factory with extra holes that were covered with a perfectly cut and chromed rectangular flexible piece of metal? I have a late 1970's Supra that is nice with two perfectly drilled holes below where the butt plate is located. The holes are perfectly chromed on the inside so it led me to believe the drum was incorrectly drilled and Ludwig corrected the problem with a slick fix. Maybe Ludwig sold seconds for less money back in the day? Let's hear about your snares with flaws and see some pictures.

Happy Holidays!

Have seen this exact thing before on a 70's Supraphonic. They did a good job covering it up, as it is hardly noticeable once assembled.

You're right Nevin. It came with a kit I bought this summer and haven't had much time to do anything with it until this week. I was taking the snare apart to clean it when I noticed it.

I know of 3 Ludwig 69-71 13" metal piccolo snares that have double holes for the strainer and or the throwoff. guess they were having a hard time getting the setup right on these.

remember something else. i bought a blue olive badge chrome over wood 5x14 recently. after detailing it, i noticed i couldn't get a couple of tension rods lined up properly. checked everything over and found that a few of the lug holes were drilled in the wrong location on the shell. i put a set of single flange hoops and clips on it to remedy the oops.

Mike that is a great solution. The drum looks great!

This is how the butt-end holes look like on my Monroe badge LM402.

I bought the snare new in March 1990 and it’s still with me.

I didn’t do it so it must be factory,...
