Hi, I have a question regarding a kit I'm about to buy. There is two little holes on the side of the bass drum that the owner says are from the removing of the muffler and no extra holes. That really look like holes from muffler, but all my searches suggest that this line of drum didn't muffler on the bass drum. I attached the only picture where they shown. I don't have close up. What do you guys think of it. Thanks.
Question about Hollywood Bass Drum 1966 Last viewed: 39 minutes ago
Those are extra holes. Ludwig never made any kind of internal muffler for the bass drum. Looks good otherwise....
Looks like someone installed a regular internal muffler on the bass drum. I suppose there could be a slight chance that the factory could have done it as a special order but I don't see how you'd ever prove it and is something so atypical that most anyone who is fussy about that sort of thing is going to consider them "extra holes" no matter who drilled them (factory, music store, or a previous owner).
BTW there's no such thing as a "Hollywood" bass drum. That's a "classic" model bass drum that was sold along with super classic toms (and usually a supra-phonic snare drum) as a Hollywood outfit configuration.
Thanks for your input...
K.O. yeah, what was in my mind was the possibility that the classic bass drum model could ever have a muffler in the Hollywood config. Thanks for the precision, though. I'm far from a "connaisseur" in vintage drum, but I learn every day.
Next question is... are those extra holes will have a big impact on the value of the set when I would want to sell it?
no way never that i know and as many holly woods seen I have not encountered one
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
Would it be too much to ask for your general appreciation of this kit if I upload the rest of the photos from the seller. The snare is a Rogers SuperTen from the early 70s in very good condition. I want to buy it but the extra holes in the bass drum concern me a bit. I'm probably go for it anyway... Any thought?
You will like the SuperTen snare...I own a 5" and 6.5" and like them both...
The extra holes in the BD can be filled and fixed with little pieces of wrap taken from under a lug...
Since there are extra holes, submit your offer accordingly...This now puts this kit into a player`s grade category...
Good luck!!
Cheers

Extra holes do seem to matter a lot to some people. Those looking for a "perfect" set will shy away from buying such a set and therefore there is a lower demand which likely translates into a lower selling price. Tough to quantify how much less. It's certainly not something that is going to effect the sound of the drum in any significant way...If it were mine I'd probably re-install a muffler so it looks like it "originally" did. They aren't holes if there's something there.

Interesting!
Again, thanks for the comments. Much appreciated.
