i had no idea drum heads wear out just sitting over time i have the original remo clear from 1976 on the bottoms of all my drums and pinstripes on top and they been on there sinse 1987 ?? i must be deff Laughing H

I never give it much thought. I only change the heads when they get worn out from play.

Mylar is pretty durable stuff... the idea that you have to change heads every year is something promoted by the people that make them, in my opinion.

I take my heads off,twirl them around my head ,and scream like a chicken on my front lawn,and chant umbella,umbella.They tune up perfectly when I put them back on..This works with all brands ...except Premier everplay metric.

I don't think I've ever had a plastic skin "stretch out". But even if they do I would be more concerned about the collar to bearing edge contact changing from loosening them up and then trying to re-tighten them.
