What happened to the finish - Slingy red sparkle Last viewed: 6 minutes ago

That set has been listed a long time. I like it except for the dull finish.

You guys are hilarious! Thought it was just my pc that wouldn't show it. What do you think about the price? I was actually thinking of buying it and then re-selling one 12, 20, & the snare for pretty cheap.

I've seen this "freckling" with many of Slingerland's glass glitter wraps from the early and mid 60's, but worse with red. The wrap also has that "orange peel" look to it. Not sure what causes this freckling. "Age spots" I guess!

This kit is the Duet and I also thought about snagging it. I'd just prefer it to have the 16" floor tom. I just have too many kits right now!

That's interesting, Mark. the only time i've ever seen that orange-peel/freckling was on a red sparkle Slingerland 6-lug snare; pretty odd.........marko

A common problem with Kent silver sparkle wrap. It turns white speckled. I've also seen it happen on blue sparkle MIJ's

Well, now it's caused me to look at my kit - '56 orange glass glitter. It has some of the same spots, but not nearly as bad. Worst is on the BD. FT a little bit. RT almost none. If I run my finger nail across each spot, I can feel a little break in the wrap. Is there any way to prevent it from spreading? I'd be heartbroken if my beloved orange kit turned out like that red one.

Orange? That picture looks more like Champagne or faded Gold. The moisture has entered the air space between the top layer of clear tinted plastic and the bottom layer of solid color plastic. As I stated earlier, the sparkling bits may have corroded if they are metallic. From the picture, the glittering bits seem to be irregularly shaped shards of crushed glass rather than uniform shape and size pieces of aluminum foil. But, I think that the main problem is from mold or mildew on the bottom layer of plastic. I don't know of any way to stop the process that has been going on for many years. Maybe clear coating the wrap with an acrylic treatment can stave off any further degradation of the wrap?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

From robyn64

That is the rare "Bert Cambel" finish. With just a snap of ur fingers...it just disappears in thin air.

Ha~! Laughing H Not many of the youngin's here would know this Robyn. good ol Bert on Soap. I still snap my fingers and do the same. :D

I like the aged spots on the sparkle finishes. I don't mind them at all.

Grooves that's bad to hear the dark spots in your wrap are cracked. I don't know of a good fix offhand. So hope you get some feedback on that.

Leedybdp do you think as the wrap shrinks over time the glass shards start to cut and poke through the surface of the wrap? Thus causing them to open?
