'65 Ludwig Clubdate! Matching dates!

20,12,14 in Black Lacquer with nickel hardware Clubdate kit in excellent condition. Has been touched up through the years as you can see. Has a couple coats of "clear" applied to bring out the shine, and to also keep it from flaking down the road. I am currently traveling and cant confirm the exact stamp date in the shells ('65 for sure), but they are all the same....the only difference is that the 12" is stamped in red, and the other two remaining is in black. Not sure if this was the EXACT date of change or what...but found it interesting. Clean kit, with no extra holes or mods. $900 (gifted through PayPal, or you pay fee's) plus shipping, and can get in one box with some disassembly. what a neat kit nevin. I think the clearing is a great idea to save and preserve these drums for a long time. no more duco flaking, some sheen and protection. you don't see too many 20's without the rail. the clipper and the angled cymbal mount are nice touches. anyone that hasn't used a hoop mounted clipper, I can tell you that they work! ive got several and use them often. someone should treat themselves to these. you won't find a better seller either.

Really nice set of drums. Can't go wrong with black & nickel. Would be really cool if this was the kit that showed the change from red to black ink. any chance of that, Mike? Was the change in '65?......marko

according to the data that rick gier gathered, the change from red to ink showed up in march 65. march of 65 is also a common month for the change from red to white felt mufflers. most 65 drums have white felt mufflers. I do see red felt on at least one of Nevins drums. transition period for sure.

To clarify and add to what Mike said, I wrote that in about March 1965 black ink joined the red ink already in use on date stamps. Both Black and Red ink appear on date stamps until about September 1965 and then red seems to have dropped out. These are rough dates and some overlap may exist.

Now we return you to surface's regularly scheduled thread.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:

Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

Oddly enough, the 12" which has the red date stamp also has a white felt muffler that has been made to be red...either dyed or markered up to resemble one. I would guess that the owner did not do this as it doesn't match the floor tom which has the white....could be wrong but still sticking to this happening at the factory.
