Snare tension issues on my Zoomatic Sound King snare

Loading...

I recently acquired a 14x6.5 Slingerland Sound King snare in beautiful condition. I replaced the 20 strand snares that came with it with a set of 30 strand Pure Sounds (I like a lot of snare) and spent a good hour tuning it up and getting the right snare tension. I got it sounding great. I mean really, really nice. But then I threw off the snares and noticed they were still buzzing loosely against the reso instead of being fully off. I feel like the Zoomatic throw off isn't 'throwing off' enough. I have to really loosen the snares to lose the snare sound, to the point that I get an unreasonable amount of buzz when the snares are in the on position.

Anyway, could this be a problem with the design of the Zoomatic strainer itself? Or maybe 30 strand wires are a bit much for this particular drum (though the snare beds appear perfectly wide enough to support them)? Or could it even be a tuning problem? I really hope you guys can help me figure this one out because I am absolutely loving the sound I get from this drum.. Until I throw off the snares.

Is the strainer near the end of it's upper adjustment (tightening)? Maybe loosening the strainer down and then tightening up the wires would help. I have the same snare and it doesn't do what you're describing.

Check that the butt plate is aligned on the shell correctly.. the mounting holes on the shell are often larger in diameter than the actual screws that attach the butt.. this allows for an amount of movement. The butt if even slightly off may not allow the wires to sit square against the head. In particular if you are using metal, or a tape strip to mount the strainer...

This had me buzzing for a while..

Cheers

John

How about this test.

Measure how far the strainer drops. The flat piece that moves up and down on the throw off drops about 3/8 of an inch on my Sound Kings, and the snares end up well below the resonant head.

Also look to see if the throw off lever reaches both ends of the slot it travels in.

I have the same problem on a 80's model 4x14 snare. I have another 4x14 (Nashville era) and a 60's Artist (I think) with Zoomatics that work just fine but try as I might I can't get the one on this one snare to function properly. Either the snares are on, and stay more or less on when you drop the throw, or they are off when the throw is down but remain too loose when engaged. I've tried all sorts of things (using snare cord, using snare tabs, using cord on one side and a tab on the other, longer snares, shorter snares, centered more towards the butt, centered more towards the throw, etc.etc.) with no luck. I'm tempted to install a different throw off (using and adaptor plate, no new holes) but I'm not sure I'll ever use this particular drum enough to justify doing so. I wish I knew what the solution was. It's frustrating. I've done nothing special to the other two Zoomie equiped drums and they function fine.
