Hey friends,

I picked this bad boy up tonight.... very cool drum in very good condition. All the hardware seems original on it. The wrap is clearly a re-wrap but was done very well..... it's the shell that gets me! It seems to be a single ply mahogany with a maple re-ring..... whats up with that? I thought Radio Kings only came in maple, and the mahogany/poplar/mahogany ones were the "student" model.

The badge clearly has a newer heavy duty vent, and looks to my eye as if it was painted at some point to make it look new..... or it's a completely new badge in all!

The hoops have the engraving and do fit a slightly larger head then today (a la aquarian american vintage)

Any info on this would be great (even if someone could guarantee me that this is not a slingerland shell!), as well as an approximate value on this drum!

I can't seem to see the three plies though..... I figured if it was a slingerland it would have a thick "baseball bat" bearing edge like I'm used to seeing?

I knew the vent was new, but figured that badge maybe had been re-done? Painted and such?

Slingerland DID make a 1-ply mahogany Student Radio King.

I had one back in the late '80's and sold it to Nicko McBrain.

Often wondered if he ever cut any tracks with it.

Are you sure it was mahogany? I have never seen that before. They did produce some shells with rather dark, reddish brown maple.

Not much of a mystery. Re-wrapped three ply Radio King snare. The odds of it being solid mahogany are slim.

It's not a three ply Cooper. Unless the plies are super thin, which they shouldn't be from this era?
