First Drum set Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I think my story is worse. They weren't my drums. It was a 1967 Rogers set. 20-12-14. Sparkling Blue Pearl, Luxor snare drum that matched. Zildjian cymbals. I learned on that set for two years. Then one day....... they were gone. Just plain gone. Sold without a word of warning. It was like the world had ended.

Twenty five years later, I moved back into my hometown, and tried to find those drums. I found out they had not been cared for. Stored in a barn, allowed to rust, had water damage, and were eventually hauled to the dump.

My drum horror story isn't too bad... my first set was a run of the mill early 70's Slingerland in silver sparkle, 13-16-22. Was the mid 80's and vintage gear just wasn't the in thing so I heat gunned the wrap off to have a natural wood look not knowing that the mahogany probably wasn't really finish grade. Was going to clear coat the shells, never got around to it but some years later I decided to put silver sparkle wrap back on. Self adhesive wrap that I wish I could still get, came out great and fresh looking but stupidly sold the kit for 350 bucks or something in the mid 90's.

I think we all probably have some 'horror' stories regarding drum gear we wish we never sold :D

Found it!!

There's nothing unusual about a Slingerland bass drum from the sixties having a rail mount. It's not as commonplace for a seventies Slingy bass drum to have a rail. But, it's possible that the original owner wanted one from the factory or music store. One could have been installed on an undrilled bass drum by the owner.

I was just so happy to get a first drum set that I didn't want to alter them at all. I didn't even change the hoop mounted tom to the left side. My mid 50s Gretsch three piece set in Cameo Coral and Charcoal Duco finish were beautiful to a lefty kid who couldn't decide whether to play lefty or righty. So, I played with lefty feet and righty hands at first. Within a couple of years, I switched to playing open-handed on a righty set. This was the first paid gig I played with a bass player classmate from high school and two guys from a neighboring city. I graduated from high school three months after that picture was taken. My graduation present was a righty four piece Rogers set in Black Diamond Pearl for which I selected each component from the catalog..

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

That`s not even close. The rail on the OP pic is closer to the batter head and comes out past the badge. Also, the diamond shape cymbal mount is different that the OP pic.

At first I thought is was a Krupa Delux, but now I`m thinking Gretsch, but that FT leg mount aint clear enough to make out if it`s diamond shaped.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

My first kit (still have it) was a Pearl-made Dixie, Charcoal Pearl with matching snare. Back in the 90s I bought and played a Premier XPK. At the time, my Dixie snare worked well with what I was playing and so that it would match a little better (with the Rosewood stained/lacquered XPK) I stripped the Charcoal Pearl wrap off of it and threw the wrap away.

Fast forward to recent years, I deeply regret that as it is hard to match that color wrap due to age.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
