Old Ludwig Marching Snare for kit Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I'm looking at building a kit around my 1920s Ludwig Bass drum. Would this drum (see ebay link) be a wise addition? There is a crack at the badge/label but it doesn't go right through the shell. It looks to be of the right sort of vintage but would there better options for a project like this? And is it likely to accept modern heads? (although I'm likely to use the calf batter if it's in good shape) One of the attractions of this one is the very low international shipping on offer.

Hi Andrew!

Very nice project... and do you have the hardest part of it (Bass Drum)!!!LoLoLoLo

I got a 20´s Ludwig 15" snare, and new heads fits right (even it is a little bit out of round)Yes Sir

Until now, you may find regularly old snares in good condition, and very affordable..

Go for it.... and share some pics when you end it!!

Good Luck!!

Are you asking about the snare to use as a snare or as a tom? I'd go with something shallower (and metal) for a snare but as a potential floor tom that might work well.

Are you looking to build a modern type kit out of old drums or a set that is authentic to its time period?

Thanks KO, I should've been clearer. I'd be using the drum as a tom, either floor or ride. I'm wanting to create a modern style kit out of old drums (like others have done on here in the style of Levon Helm) but where possible using old calf heads. The bass drum is an odd size (just under 26") so calf is the main option. It has a reasonably new calf batter.

If I was to use a 14x10 as a FT what would be a good option as a ride tom that would fit in with the look and age? I don't see too many smaller marching options. I do have an 18" Carlton Tenor with tube lugs that I currently use as a bass drum very successfully but I could use it as a FT as well I guess but probably not interchangeable without different heads/tuning etc. It's bright red also.

i'd use the 14 as a ride tom with that 18 as a floor. just a thought. would go well with the bass drum size.

That's probably the smartest option Mark. Here's the Carlton

Andrew,

I think I'd be getting a better handle on the (actual) Shipping cost.. something wrong there..

Eg; It tells me only 27 bucks to OZ... Real cost would be more like 200..

Cheers

it was slightly more to NZ John but not much more. However, the ebay global shipping program has thrown up some very reasonable shipping prices of late and I've taken advantage without any problems. We'll see as I've pulled the trigger. That said, some of the GSP prices on small parts is insanely expensive.

From Chicago Dave

That red Carlton is pretty cool.

It sure is Dave. It's an absolutely brilliant bass drum. It currently has the original calf reso and a fiberskyn batter and it's dialed in just right as a bass drum. Not yet sure if I want to meddle with it to double it up as a floor tom.
