Gretsch, Walberg and Auge or ????? Last viewed: 18 hours ago

Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please forgive any obvious newbness. I have an old tom-tom that I thought was a Gretsch but, after doing some research online I am questioning this fact. The drum is 9 x 13 with Rocket lugs and a diamond clip tom mount. The hoops are held on with claw style tension rods, which have a larger hex head instead of the current standard. The inside of the drum is painted black and there are rectangular wood washers inside the drum where each lug is attached. The wrap has been removed long ago and the wood looks like maple (horizontal grain) 3 ply with reenforcement hoops. I am considering buying calf skin heads for it and using it for recording, but want to get a sense of whether the drum is worth the money and effort. I know nothing of Walberg and Auge so I'm not sure how the quality of their shells would compare to a Gretsch;or was one company doing it for both of them I appreciate any light you can shed on this. I will post pics as soon as possible.

Thanks, Christian

Not an expert by any means, but know a little. Walberg and Auge were primarily know for their hardware designs, which they provided to all the American drum companies of the era. In return for hardware, they sometimes took drum shells in from those companies and created kits which they put out under their own name. The drum you are describing is probably W & A, with the black interior and all, but the shell is most likely a Jasper three or six ply maple shell, exactly the same as the ones made for Gretsch. Probably worth restoring, and if its in round and the bearing edges aren't damaged, it will sound great!

Thanks for the quick reply. This drum is off of my first drum set (30 years ago) and was different from the rest of the kit which was a gold sparkle Mercury kit (from what I recall, it seemed a fairly cheap kit) but this tom always sounded significantly better to me even at a young age. I think I will go ahead and get some calf skin heads for it. Any recommendations on a good source for calfskin heads? (or should I start a new thread?)

Yeah, the rocket lugs and black paint are typical of W & A.

I've substituted Remo Renaissance heads for calf heads on set and the sound is very similar. And it's much easier dealing with the plastic heads.

You can get Goatskins for a little less than calfskins at Earthtones.
