Thunder Drums

Hi all, I picked up this drum set today. Included in the deal was a 22" bass drum, 16" floor tom and 12" and 13" rack toms. I'm not sure about the depth of these drums yet. I was passing the shop when I saw them in the window and bought them then and there, otherwise somebody else would have beaten me to it. I took the 2 toms and told the guy I'd come back for the rest later. I'll share some photos of the full set when I get it. In the meantime I have a couple of toms. They have a Rogers look about them. When I first saw the kit I was sure it was a Maxwin by Pearl because I've seen those kits around and the lugs and shell sizes are identical, but when I got a better look at it I saw it said Thunder on it.

Here are some photos of the toms. Can anybody tell me any more information about these drums?

The badge reads, MADE IN TAIWAN R.O.C TAY-E CO. LTD

HY the are nearly the same as Maxwin, i restored one once - a wee while ago, they had quite a good sound! It´s, as far as i know, another stencil brand of Pearl!

Be careful with the Tom mounts, they are some kind of aloy cast...they can´t stand a lot of pressure;-)

Here some pics of the Thunder i had! On the one pic you can see the Thunder label on the snaredrum!

You can see the way i got them and a bit of restoring:-)

Best regards

Christian

Do ya think that there's any connection to the current Taye drum brand?

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Cheers Christian. Excellent job on that restoration. How did you go about re-wrapping the shells? That turned out really well.

leedybdp - I was wondering the same thing. I've no idea. I would think there is some connection there. If Star became Tama then maybe this company became Taye, but I don't know. :)

I'm going to use standard Pearl tom mounts. I tried and they're the same size so they'll work. Can I ask what is the paint you used on the inside of the shells? I had thought about doing something to the inside, because that wood doesn't look great. And how did the paint effect the bearing edges?

Just to help you out here. You say that they have a Rogers look. No - they do not. They are Pearl all the way.

At the same time, I believe I know how you would be mistaken. Some early Tama had lugs that looked like Rogers lugs.....crossed with these Pearls. Note the tail (or lack thereof).

BTW - the Tama lugs I refer to all seem to have been very high quality - many Star/Tama collectors/enthusiasts treasure that 70s Tama stuff - for a reason....quality.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

You're right. I would never mistake these for Rogers, don't get me wrong. I just think they have a Rogers look about them. Perhaps they were trying to copy the Rogers look as a lot of these Stencil kits tried to copy the look of well known brands. The second I saw it I thought it had to be a Maxwin, but then I saw the badge said Thunder and I figured it was just another Pearl stencil kit. The same as Maxwin, just with a different badge.

I have an old 12" Star MIJ tom and it seems like they were trying to copy the look of the Gretsch round badge. Even the Star badge is round. I think this was a feature of the MIJ sets. They tried to copy the name brands, well at least aesthetically and perhaps not sonically.

Dia Duit Chromeo;-)

i had to wrap that Set because the old wrap was broken and gone on some places. It turned out quite well:-)

I used a nomal grey wood paint that comes close to the silver sealer of the old days. I did not regonize any effektion on the edges!

I was surprised by the very good sound of that set. One of my friends bought it after he heard that yoke;-)

Sets like these are cool do some experimental work;-)

best regards to good old eire

Dia duit! Ha ha! Begorrah ;) I'm impressed, you know more Irish than I do! Ha!

I might try to re-wrap this kit and make it look nice, but I don't want to lose that THUNDER badge. I think that makes the kit look so cheesy and 80's. I can't help thinking of Knight Rider and Street Hawk and these kind of TV shows from the 80's. :D I'm all about that THUNDER badge. Pure cheese!

Sláinte ;-)
