60's Ludwig Snare Stand

Loading...

I just picked up a 60's Ludwig snare stand--sight unseen--and I noticed that the snare rotates even when all the wing nuts are secured and tight. Is this normal for vintage snare stands, or is my stand missing something? To be more specific, once I set up the stand in a comfortable position, I can put my hands on the snare like a driving wheel and spin it. When I'm playing, as my legs move, the snare moves slightly. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Can you post a few pics of the stand? Could be a number of things but seeing the model of the stand might help narrow down the problem. Some stands have a small metal insert the wing screw presses into to tighten the tube in the stand. This is a Slingerland stand but many used the same type.

Poetman,

If you have a WFL flat base model like mine in the picture, there is a metal ring or collar inside the female tube that gets pushed tight against the male tube when the wingnut is tightened. It's hard to see when you look inside the tube because it sits back flush until you tighten the wingnut down. Run your finger or look inside the upper portion of the female tube where the wingnut is. If you have any hollow spots or voids, you are missing a portion of this collar more than likely. A very possible easy fix is to cut a shim out of an aluminum can and wrap around the male tube before inserting. You can probably only fit half of a diameter in, but it should take up enough slack to be able to tighten properly. I hope this helps.

Here are some photos of the WFL stand. There is a hole on the tube. Perhaps I'm missing a piece?

There are these holes as well

Am I missing a part that connects to these holes?

Hold the base down with your feet and try to twist the snare frame.. you can then see where the fault is. Check around the base as well, maybe missing a rivet down low.

Cheers

What snare frame should I twist? What is the fault for which I'm looking?

thanks

Just hold the top and secure the bass... try to turn the top.. where it rotates at should reveal whats wrong with it..

( once had one that pivoted right at the base)..

Cheers

Sorry, I don't follow you. I'm not sure how rotating the stand will reveal what's wrong? I've rotated, twisted, turned, and looked, but since I do not know for what to look I cannot identify the problem.
