Almost looks more like rust than patina
That's because its been sitting at the bottom of the Marianas trench for the last 50 years. It fell overboard on a jazz cruise and was only recently was recovered via submersible.

Dry I would imagine. The surface being etched by all those years of exposure, should roughen it up to effectively make it sound as if it had been sand blasted.
I saw a trans stamp with that same kind of patina a few years ago. It was an 18" with a large crack.
