I'm making a players drum from a pretty beat-up WFL snare. I filled in the worst parts last night and sanded today, then happened upon a bottle of Goof-Off on a trip to attic and thought i'd see what i could do with the badge. Here's a pic for fun. Now how do i remove the grommet off of a thin shell like that?

Thanks guys! Oddball: I'll go grab my chainsaw! I know my question seems really amateur, but I took home-ec in school instead of shop class. Don't knock it! I was the only guy in a class full of women :D

Maybe this will give you a few jumping off points to get you started...each grommet has its own unique challenges, but I just did one in a similar set. The pics are from a 1966 Ludwig Copper (on Chrome on Steel - would that be COCOS??:D) 13"-14" Timbales.
Anyway, if it will help. I snipped of the curled edge with the tools shown, then carefully ground it down nearly flush with the spacer, then pulled it right through.
Hey good luck!
Here's how they came out....for removing the paint but retaining the patina of the badge, I used a great product that comes in handy for just this kind of thing called "Citristrip" http://www.citristrip.com that you can get at any Lowe's, etc. The grommet and spacer were buffed out with a 6" firm spiral with ***elers rouge. I know I can't reuse them (replacements on the way, along with tool from My Old Kentucky Drums (Thanks for the heads-up, Grantro!), but what the heck....look for complete pics on the drums when they come in....still have to find a reasonably priced mid-60's twin to replace the 14" missing badge.
Thank you Poregon! Great info with pics! Bless you!
