Tommy, Yeah I was just giving you a hard time :) I understood you. Just stinks that as drummers we are the only "acoustic" instrument in a rock band type setting. Heck even with a lot of big bands the horns are all mic'd. Anyway yeah with the many groups I have played with these past few years I do miss playing in Germany. My main group in Germany had a great sound guy. The same out at every gig and he made sure I was always setup really well and had my wireless in ears dialed in perfect. The few shows I had to go without my sound guy I really did not like. I gave him one of my Sonor kits when it was time for me to leave Germany as a thank you for all the hard work he did. Anyway the lead singer of that band decided to turn down that gig tomorrow so I have time to work on my Bop drumming this weekend! I hear you guys on the Phonics. I need to update my signature because I have bought and sold a few kits out of the lot. After I did a few recording sessions with my Phonic kit I sold it to a drummer in NY of all places. Anyway I am after another Phonic kit and snare. The next phonic kit I do I will keep it also as a three piece and get the bass drum cut down to 14" depth. Phonics with a heavier beech shell do project nicely. Only my S Classix bass drum has more punch un mic'd out of all my kits. Playing it would literally knock things off the wall in my practice studio. Manny

Did you have a Phonic Plus kit ? All Phonic BD`s are 14" deep.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

We played an outdoor gig a few weeks ago on the patio, there was no need to mic anything except for the vocals. I think it depends on how big the outdoor venue is, we had tables 10-20 ft. away from where we were set up and most people were eating, with lots of kids running around. We kept the volume pretty low, here's a video, I think the drums came out fine.https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=eOMR-y9Fbc8

Your Rogers kit sounded amazing there! band3 Actually the entire band sounded great. That would be a great example of smaller gigs where un mic'd drums are ok. We do some of those gigs also.

Good to know on the Phonics. I guess the ones I have come across were all Phonic plus drums. In my other Phonic kit I had an 18" floor tom cut down to an 18" bass drum. Recorded really well and I kinda miss that kit. I am working another deal currently though that would include a sweet snare.

Well thanks, you're too kind, I don't know about great, but it's a fun little band and we make some good noise.

BTW, do you still have that Rogers kit? I'm still looking for bigger sizes, thanks.

Found a clip of my old band in Germany. We played in some little side room of a bowling alley on the Kaserne in Bamberg.

We used just two powered speakers; one for our lead singer and the other for guitars. Sounds halfway decent. Now if only our bass player had not been 3 sheets to the wind it would have sounded great.

They would be as loud as any 3 ply Ludwig drums would be,since Clubbies, Classics and early Standards use the same exact shell.

Most of the bands that play the Staten Island Richmond county fair don't mic up the drums, and they were loud enough from a few hundred feet away.

Yeah man I was in the Army for a while. Hence my screen name.

Airborne = I was a paratrooper (jumped out of airplanes)

SFC = Sergeant First Class - the rank I made it up to

I remember a similar past post about small venues and mics for everything but drums.

One of the ideas given was to purchase a small inexpensive/portable mixer, mics, stands and cables.

Mixer

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-XENYX-802-Mixer-103845053-i1153499.gc - $65

Mics

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Digital-Reference-DRDK4-4-Piece-Drum-Mic-Kit-105931539-i1532398.gc - $60

Bass Mic Stand

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Musician-s-Gear-Low-Profile-Die-Cast-Mic-Stand-451037-i1323837.gc - $10

Get a dual mic mount and boom stand for the two overhead mics

http://www.guitarcenter.com/K-M-Microphone-Bar-Dual-Mic-Holder-107083222-i1322950.gc - $19

For around $170, you'll have an inexpensive way to mic your kit and allow you to connect into the vocal/guitar sound system, if available in smaller venues.

Tim,

Thank you for the suggestion. I actually do have all the mics and stands to mic every drum and do overheads. The one thing I lack is a mixer. I wonder for the smaller gigs if I would simply go from the main out of the drum mixer to say a single input of the main mixer.

Like I said 98% of the time the club or venue handles sound. I think though the small mixer for myself is a good idea and from now I will I will cary enough mic's for myself to gigs should I run into this situation again.

Back in Germany when I had to mic myself I did the one mic on bass drum and two overheads. Worked great for smaller gigs. I also actually did well with one mic on the bass drum and a large diaphram mic overhead.
