Time to start hoarding speed kings??

From the Vic's Drum Shop Facebook page. I assume it's probably because they aren't selling anymore. If the SK was profitable you better believe they would find a supplier.

BREAKING NEWS:

Ludwig Drums discontinues their Speed King Pedal.

Due to a supplier no longer making critical Speed King parts, Ludwig-Musser Drums and Percussion has decided to discontinue this iconic bass drum pedal. While Ludwig did consider using another supplier, several parts would still have to be made and finished by hand, doubling the cost to manufacture the pedal. While Ludwig will continue to explore manufacturing options, at this time the company cannot say if and when they would be able to offer the pedal again.

There are at least 37 Bazillion Speed King pedals floating around out there. Don't worry. It'll be at least three, or four decades before Speed Kings even start to become 'a rare commodity.'

Bill Fulton is sitting pretty though! He owns a bunch of SK's.

Too many great drums to list here!

So I shouldn't depend on a surplus of Speed Kings for a retirement plan??:) To be perfectly honest I didn't even know they still made them. I can't remember the last time I saw a new speed king

Yes Sir John, I think you're right there, just like there will never be a shortage of Supra's floating around. What do you think there's more of... SK's or Supra's?

Tough call, has to be at least a million by now! They've been cranking out both supra's and SK's for decades! Especially during the 60's... Ludwig outsold and out manufactured just about every other drum company out there. Good question though. I wonder how many supra's and SK's have been made? Somebody at Ludwig must know at least a ball-park figure for total manufacture number of those two items..

Well you almost have to assume that just about every drum set they sold came with a SK. What other pedals did they offer back then?? Just the Ghost???

The Speedmaster was the 'econo' version of the SK. All I know is, they must have topped a million pedals manufactured (easy) during the 'Ringo Boom Era'! That cat sold more drums for Ludwig than McDonalds sold burgers!

With the proliferation of much better pedals over the last decade, I'm quite surprised the SK has survived this long. While I've never been a fan of the SK, I've got two refurbished pedals; one for my 1971 Super Classic kit and the other for my Maple Classic Downbeat kit. The absolute best SK is the one with my Downbeat kit, refurbished by Jesse Carraway of drummechanix.com. The rebuild/refurbish is of the best quality I've seen, with no offense to Bill Fulton! The pedal with my 1971 kit was rebuilt by someone on ebay. I believe the name was something like Carl Club, or similar. An OK rebuild, but nowhere near the quality of the Drummechanix pedals!

I know we each have our own views on the SK and I just wanted to share mine!
