Another potential beauty! Damn, Stedi, where are you finding all these vintage Camco's in Europe? Did you have that one shipped in, or did you find it locally?

Another local find.

I found this set over a year ago but the owner wasn’t keen on selling.

Last week he contacted me with the good news.

I like to know if somebody would have some input on the color difference.

I could be wrong but I don’t believe the 12” is Ebony or Stradivarius stain.

For Stradivarius, I don’t think it's red enough and the few pictures of ebony finishes I’ve seen seem much darker.

Could it be that the coloring at Camco wasn’t always very consistent and that they’re different batches of the same color?

Right On! Way to go Stef, he finally gave in...That's soooo cool. What do you think of that bass drum? Heaven on earth? Did it come as a 6/6 ply like Steve's/Dolfan or a 5 ply no rings Oaklawn? Interior pics of the bass drum soon?

Here's an easy way to tell the difference between Walnut Stain and Ebony Stain. Since I've owned numerous amounts of both, I've found that the Ebony Stain drum kits and orphans are not quite as rare as we once thought. The kit I bought from RyanVonR was an Ebony Stain kit. Camco made the Ebony Stain finish by 1st applying black stain to the shell followed by Walnut Stain. I believe the true color would be considered Dark Walnut Stain, but to avoid confusion they named it Ebony... One can clearly see the black base coming though the walnut stain on most all Ebony kits as they are just a Walnut stain with a black base stain applied 1st...Ryan and I discovered or should I say confirmed what I had suspected for quite some time. Ebony Stain was not an individual stain color on it's own like Stradivarius, but rather the same walnut finish just with a bottom black base coat.

Stef, if you decide you are still not a big fan of big bass drums, I would like to be 1st on the list to buy the kit from you if you ever decide to sell. Especially since 24s are my favorite size.

It’s definitely 6/6 ply so with re-rings.

You were absolutely right about the sound on the „earlier” Camco 24” bass drums.

Where big bass drums can sometimes be a bit of a pain to keep under control, this one doesn’t have that. A power stroke III type of head on batter and Ambassador on the front and BOOM. No muffling what so ever. So much low, it makes your stomach turn.

This Camco was used by a top studio drummer. God knows on how many recording this set was used. Endorsement issues made him decide to let it go but I could tell, he wasn’t very happy with that.

About the color, I thought about the same thing yesterday.

What if Ebony isn’t that scarce after all and many sets and orphans that are thought to be „Walnut” are actually Ebony or like you say „Dark Walnut”.

Looks like ebony stain to me which is basically dark walnut. Stadivarius was an LA color.

When Ryan hand sanded the kit, he sent photo's all along the way and confirmed what DolFan had said years ago about the Ebony Stain. About the sound of those 24s, they are almost unbelievable, when I bought the 1st one it shocked me, and yes you can feel it in your chest..
