Looking for some help regarding my new 67 Ludwigs Last viewed: 34 minutes ago

Hey, folks! First of all, this site has been an invaluable resource to me already in dating my kit (as well as knowing what to look for in a vintage kit). Thanks.

I just picked up my first vintage Ludwig kit over the weekend. Not sure if it was the best deal, but I snagged them for $700. According to the information I've read here it appears to be a 1967 Ludwig in Champagne Sparkle. Dimensions are 14x20" kick, 8x12" rack tom, and 16x16" floor tom. Unsure what model drum these might be as well as what the plys may be made of. Any ideas for figuring that out? The only date stamp I've found was in the floor tom which read May 29, 1967. Here is the photo gallery.

The floor tom and the kick drum are in fantastic shape. Both drums have bearing edges in decent shape, kick drum hoops are in good condition with surprisingly little wear. I even got the cymbal mount for the kick drum, although I don't believe I will end of using it. Floor tom legs seem legit although it appears someone replaced one of the rubber feet at some point. Most of the hardware is in good shape, just old. Not a lot of pitting to be found.

The reason I am posting is because I am trying to figure out what may have happened to the rack tom. The bearing edges are in fair condition and it looks like it took some damage during it's life. It appears the drum was dropped and then repaired. The shell behind the mount is dented in as it is behind a couple of the lugs. The wrap was redone and appears to be original (matches the other two drums perfect in color) except it was as though whoever did the repairs didn't match things up with the hardware so the original holes are about 1/4" off all the way around the drum. It does not fully adhere to the drum as it approaches the bearing edge. I try to show most of this in the previously mentioned imgur album.

The inside of the tom seems ok and the drum does not seem out of round. I did note the drum heads fit snugly on this tom which I assume is because the wrap isn't fully glued at the edge. The lugs seem like they also may be slightly different than the lugs on the kick and floor. The three lines at the very top are the same length instead of the middle line being slightly longer like on the other drums. Could this drum have been a knock-off or a factory second? Maybe it is just a hacky repair job. Hoping someone might be able to give me some insight.

I plan on gigging with this kit so I am happy as long as the drum sounds good. I will probably attempt to replace the rack tom with an equivalent from the same year later on.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far! I tried to be as thorough as possible with my descriptions. Please let me know if more information or photos would be helpful.

Ok, looks to me like the wrap was removed and put back, (badly) or… taken from another drum and glued onto that one. Why he/she didn't take the time to match up the holes is anybody's guess. The 'crime' is, they drilled -all new holes- for the hardware! Insanity plain and simple. It could also be that the wrap was removed from a 13" to repair that 12" and after matching up the first set of holes, the rest landed further and further away from the other holes as it went around the drum. $hit for brains then drilled new holes!

That's a 60's champ sparkle kit, I would just wait until a nice 8"x12", or 9"x13" shows up and buy it. The one you have was turned into swiss cheese by the last owner.

Great drums! Have fun playing them.

I'm certainly no expert but it looks to me like the drum was re-wrapped with a used piece of wrap from a different rack tom or the wrap was removed from the drum and then they tried to reapply it but couldn't get the holes to line up due to shrinkage. I think the drum itself is ok. you'll need to either do repairs on the existing wrap or re-wrap the drum. Matching the other drums will be difficult. The experts on this forum can surely give you good advice on how to proceed.

I often look out for a birthday drum and have never seen one until now. That kit is worth it for the date stampYes Sir

I agree with what Purdie and Gerald have said but I'm not sure extra holes were drilled in the shell. I suspect the wrap just didn't line up so the wrap now has extra holes

I agree that there doesn't look like extra holes in the shell, just in the wrap.

Thanks for chiming in, guys! You are correct in that the shell has no extra holes drilled (thankfully), it's just the wrap as far as I can tell. I think it's safe to say the wrap was just put on badly and not lined up properly with the holes in the shell. I'm just doing a quick clean up of the shells and hardware so I can use it at my gigs coming up this weekend. Hope to do a more thorough cleaning of the hardware later on.

I've more or less already decided to keep an eye out for a matching rack tom to replace this one. I don't think there is much that can be done to repair it short of rewrapping, and then it wouldn't match. I'm about to throw some new heads on the tom so hopefully it will sound fine. I'm not as concerned with cosmetic issues as long as it sounds good.

Someone here had a long post regarding a purchase of original Champagne Sparkle wrap. Expensive because it contains copper chips.

What's funny is, we almost used the same words to say the same thing! Only goes to show, great minds think alike! LOL
