Why were/are they such a tough sell...is this strictly in reference to the tubular tom hardware? Is it hard to adjust or not durable? I have seen this type of conversation a few times before but never really new the story behind it...

Luch, i wish i knew the answer to your questions as i`m most curious about them too.Try to even find them on ebay is almost impossible which i find strange?My belief is the size of the tubular post going into the drums and how far they penetrate the drum.I play mine to this day and the only problem i have is a some slipping on the 13" rack tom depending on how hard i`m hitting.Only play a 4 pc these days, out of the large set, and i love them and they`re easy to adjust and very durable.As jaghog pointed out tho` "the smaller config is in and too big a sizes are out". But there are a fair amount of the external post toms(classics), of the larger sizes on ebay for good $,but as i said..."try to find the modular ones of the same sizes on there-very rare.Just doesn`t add up to me?

Those 6 ply's are some awesome sounding drums, also love the double spurs they came with and the stands are almost indestructable, love the drums just never cared for the onboard hardware..... still a nice kit and Bondo wow 450.00 for that set man what a deal I would have jumped on that one..

Wayne, that kit is definitely cool! It's to big for me as I am a 5 piece person but it brings back the memories from 'yesterday.' I recall that tubular hardware when I was in school band (the interest in this stuff was starting in 4th grade) and we had to set up all this stuff for concerts or away trips. The band director was a really cool guy and influenced me a lot and he knew I liked to help and learn so I got to do all these projects for him. When there was new equipment I got to set it up and replace the old. The tubular stuff, flaking chrome, mangled bolts, tube squashed...the stuff got so trashed. We had a blue Vistalite that another student was able to purchase...replaced by a Pearl.

Regardless, all this set the stage for me and I had been researching the hardware. I have seen some different lengths and sizes too, figured it might be for concert toms and the others for sets. I could see the adjustments to a minimum for big toms on a bass for sure...but it looks so cool. There was a kit on ebay from late last year that I saw after the sale...early 80's, big toms, modular hardware, dual sets of spurs and in that lacquer orangish color...for $900.00 - damn I wish I found that when active.

Maybe we can find out more about this gear together...

Luch,really neat story about your school band days and no doubt this 34 yr. old kit i have brought back some of those memories to you.Nice to be a part of that might i add.I`m still playing part of this kit (a 4 pc) to this day and the rest are packed away in their cases but the kit is still intact and complete.I get alot of comments on their finish as they turn different shades under stage lighting and their tone has mellowed over the years and sounds killer.Great kit live and record really nicely.

I`m still tying to get more info on this modular series and i heard they were only made for a two yr.period, but i`d like to check into this further-maybe another thread on that one.I`m searching ebay for this series and seems to be not alot on there at present,a few rack and floor toms,but not many.Anyway i`ll continue my self education on them and if you find out any info please let me know as i`d love to hear from you on these wonderful 6 ply drums.Thanks for your reply and interest Luch and hope to hear from you further.
