Another Supra question Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Recently bought, looks like the real thing. Probably a 1966, can't read the stamp very well. Unfortunately, I didn't calculate shipping and import charges correctly, so I ended up paying something like $140 for it

As you can see, there's some pitting around the bead of the shell; however, the damage to the bottom bearing edge concerns me much more. Since it was fairly cheap ($60), I was planning to go for a restoration, but now that I've paid twice as much as I should have, I'm not sure if it's worth it anymore. I'm more of a player than a pure collector, so I usually go for items I can use. What do you guys think?? Is it easy to repair the damage?? Are we talking re-chroming here??

More pics. The bottom bearing edge isn't damaged all-round, I'd say about 2/3 of it are fine. Top is good.

That price you paid was still a very good deal. That is a very common problem with supra's. you can sand the chrome flaking off but it is very labor intensive to get the shell smooth. If it was mine I would just throw some heads back on it tune it up and see how it sounds, You will probably be very happy with it as it is .

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

+1 VM2000! Just clean well and enjoy.

I.M.H.O. Such kind of things (that type of defects), does not affects both the sound, is more a 'psychological' theme.

I could bet to anyone to distinguish both supra with only this difference on bottom bearing edge (in a condition like yours of course)

ps: according to the serial number this is a 66 year date on the stamp

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Since I'm interested in playability first and foremost, I guess that's good news. The price paid was just for the shell, as you see it - I'm sorry I failed to mention that - so I still think it turned out expensive. Thing is, it's done now, so there's no point nagging about it, I'll just be more careful next time. Apart from sanding, is there anything else I can do (except re-chroming, of course)??

Now the quest for the cheapest parts possible begins... and it won't be an easy one I suspect. For reasons of collectability, I'd like to try and re-fit it with original 1960s parts. I think I've read somewhere that 1960s parts are different material than 1970s, is that true??

As a last resort, you could always sandblast and polish the shell if the pitting is that bad...I`ve seen guys do that with acros and supras in the past...I would heed VM2K and Heraldo`s advice first...Just a suggestion...
