Hello from Cyprus - Slingerland mid 70s Drumset Last viewed: 13 hours ago

Hello from Cyprus and Merry Christmas to all!

Last Friday I got a mid 70s Slingerland Drum set with Chrome Wrap. The drum set is 14X5 Stainless Steel Snare and 8X12 and 9X13 Toms 14X22 Bass Drum and 16X16 Floor Tom.

The drum badge is the black with silver from Niles Illinois USA.

Also got the Original Slingerland Hardware Cymbal Stands, Pedal and Hi hat Stand. The Drum Set was stored in a garage and the sad thing is that the Chrome Wrap has some spots of rust.

My first decision was to re wrap the whole drum set but as soon as I saw that the Wrap is metallic I made second thoughts for trying and restore the Original Wrap. I am thinking that removing the Chrome Wrap will affect the sound of the drums set.

The thing that am excited about is that the lugs and all the other chrome parts (rings, lugs, legs, tensions etc) effortlessly are becoming good as new. I used a sabian cymbal cleaner on the chrome parts and removing it with a dump clothe the surprise was very very big. Shinny Happy Slingy Snare. Mallet Player2

I will upload photos of the restoration project.

Happy New Year Everyone.

Photos as I promised before starting the restoration and some pieces after the restoration.

The bass drum will need a big effort to become good as new.

Also some photos from the condition that I bought it.

The wrap of the Toms and the Floor Tom is not to hard to be restored. The main problem is the restoring of the wrap of the bass drum because there is a lot of rust on it.

At first I was thinking to re wrap it but I have made second thoughts when I discovered that the wrap is metallic.

Have anyone tried to remove this kind of wrap before? Is it going to affect the sound of the drum set if I remove it and re wrap it?

Hello from Greece :)

To begin with, I'd try not to remove the wrap. Instead, I'd do my best with the rust/corrosion and then perhaps I'd try a scratch-removal paste for cars (so long it's non-toxic and suitable for chromed objects). If you're not sure of the result, you might try it on a small spot on the underside of the drum, so it won't be visible anyway.

Good job on that snare, enjoy the restoration :)

Hello from Pennsylvania USA.

Nice score. I'd imagine Slingerlands aren't easy to come by in Cyprus. I would definitely not rewrap this. Just clean it up as best you can. They will sound beautiful just they way they are too, I'm sure.

Planning a trip to Cyrus in late March. Are vintage drums commonly found there or did you ship them in?

Thanx guys!

Alex I already bought a chrome polish paste and I will try it. I also in some spots with hard corrosion / rust I used a dremel with iron soft brush and I was amazed by the result. I used it in low rpms in order not to heat the chrome. With some polish afterwards it was good as new.

Larry I tried to import in from other Countries but it was too hard and the shipping costs too much. I got lucky because this Drum set belonged to my Drum Instructor in 80s. It was the first Drum set that he bought second hand from a professional drummer friend of him. The drum set was bought new at the price of 1500 Cyprus Pounds 2500 euros (3400 US Dollars) with today's Currency and my drum instructor bought it 1 year later. After buying a Yamaha Recording Custom the drum set was sold to a semi professional Drummer who was the owner until I bought them.

I was trying to buy them for the last 2 years and the guy was not selling them because he wanted to restore them. Finally two days after Christmas I called him again and I asked him if he wanted to sell them when he said YES. I bought them for 300 euros with original stands and pedal.

Dan Vintage Drums are hard to find in Cyprus. I was lucky to find them. To find Vintage Drums you must have connection to old school drummers from the 80s. Also I know a music store that it has 3-4 new drum sets from mid 90s if you are interested. I think the drums sets are Tama and Sonor. They had an old Tama Bubinga but they sold it.

I can make a research if you r interested and inform you.
