I often rely on Mike Layton for advice, especially if it's about some obscure vintage Ludwig drum, or wrap. Here is a copy of a pm I recently sent to Mike:
"Mikey,
I just got a chance to buy a (60's) keystone badge black galaxy bass drum and rack tom!
- NO FLOOR TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-
Should I buy them anyway? I know you still haven't found a 'legit' floor tom for your own kit, so I'm wondering is it really worth it for me to buy them? I have no clue how long it will take to find a matching floor tom.
Is the modern black galaxy very different from the old version? I was thinking maybe to buy a modern blk. galaxy floor tom to complete the kit. But... not if it's going to look 'way different'.
Help! Advice needed before I plunk down $650 for the pair.
John"
Now here is my 'open question' for all:
Considering the fact that it may take a very l-o-n-g time to find a matching floor tom, plus the fact that if one does turn up, it's going to cost a small fortune, should I go ahead a buy the drums anyway simply because they are so very rare?
Tough call here. It's just a shame that these black galaxy drums (usually) show up in rack tom/ bass drum pairs and -always- with a missing floor tom! Recently on GoodWill they auctioned off two black galaxy drums, a bass and a rack tom... and you guessed it, no floor tom! I'm wondering if it's really worth it for me to join the club of drummers that are looking for a BG floor tom to complete their kits!
