Ludwig S/L snare drum

Loading...

I have a question about the correct snare strainer on my snare drum. I have a Ludwig S/L snare drum. This is the model that was made for a couple years between "Standards" and "Rockers". I think it was in the early 1980's. The snare strainer on my drum is a P-83. I'm thinking it should be a P-85. Anyone know which would be correct? Thanks.

the p85 would be correct for that. ive got one of those drums as well. i actually have the exact p85 that came off of my s/l drum if you'd like to work some kinda swap. the p83's are worth more though.

I don't claim to be an expert on 80s Ludwig, but I would think the P-85 would be the correct one as they came out with them in the early 70s (very late 1969?).

I've got a Ludwig snare drum on eBay right now (item #320785023522), sounds like a very similar drum. It had a P-85.

I had had a 5"×14" S/L snare whose strainer was P-85.

Thanks for the info guys. Also, thanks for the offer to do a swap. I do have a P-85 I can put on the drum and I'll keep the P-83 as a spare. Thanks again.

Hate to wake a sleeping thread up, but, what is the value if any of the S/L snare? That is the snare that came with my antique store find. I was thinking of tearing it apart but maybe I will change the wrap and keep it. Thanks!

the s/l drums are awesome in my opinion. most of them are 4 ply and sound fantastic. ive got two that have both been wrapped to match kits. one is the 5" depth and the other a 6.5. these drums are real sleepers...

Wow I love those both! That first one looks like a wrap Steven Maxwell talked about and had another run made for some of his drums.

Yeah I just tapped on it a few times and it sounded half decent even with old heads and no tuning. If I can find some blue oyster pearl I will wrap it to my match the clubbies. Thanks for the reply.

The S/L snare drum came in only one model that I know of, COW with P-85's and bowtie lugs... sometimes. I've also seen them with Standard lugs. In fact, one of the late 70's or early 80's catalogs shows a couple of S/L kit configurations, one with Classic lugs, the other with Standard's, the pictures being right next to each other.

I have one S/L snare with a clear 'stained' interior, the others all have granitone. All are COW.

They really aren't bad snares. Just don't expect them to be Jazz Festival's, or a correctly tuned Pioneer for that matter.

Mike is right! I've had two of these come through here and I was genuinely surprised at how good they sounded. They may have been cheap drums when they made them, but they don't sound cheap at all. Excellent snare.

Too many great drums to list here!
