I have seen several of this on ebay and they don't seem to sell.
Are they the same shell as the jazz festival with a different strainer

basically the same shell. same as the pioneer as well, just a different lug count there. super classics are marketed as 5.5" shells. jazz festivals are usually listed as 5" shells. there are plenty that are those measurements and variants in between on the jazz festivals.

I had a SC SKB that recently sold for a seriously high amount on ebay. If I gave the # you wouldn't believe me. This one was all-around, time-warp pristine. It was one of my all-time favorite snares as well. Highly underrated snare.

I have a 5.5' transition badge Super Classic with an original uncataloged sparkle wrap that is like new and sounds freakin' awesome. Also have a 5 3/8" silver sparkle jazzfest that looks and sounds just as good.
A lot of drummers I know, including myself, aren't too crazy about Super Classic snare drums because of the super classic strainers, and butt plates.

I gotta say, I'm somewhat surprised.
I've had my 48-52 WFL's since 1965, and one of my favorite things about it IS the Classic throw-off. Smooth, positive, and absolutely reliable.
Now, I haven't tried very many of the strainers out there, but what's not to like about the Classic?

What I like @ t/ strainer & snare wires is the spread between a loose & tight sound w/ is quickly adjustable.
These things a personal, of course. Interesting to read opinions,

What I don't like about the super classic model drums:
Replacing the lost or bent throw off lever.
The snare mechanism is busted on many used models I've come across. Then I have to find whatever variation of super-classic strainer was on the drum (new, old, chrome, nickel).
Special snare wires needed for this model.
It seems to be difficult (for me anyway) to use the wires in a looser setting.
Big hole drilled in the drum for the strainer.
One the other hand:
I own super classic snare drums I've had no problems with that sound just great to me.
I like the extra half inch of depth, gives the sound a little more "body".
Jazz Fest models seem to function better for my uses. My favorite jazz fests are the ones that are 5.5 depths, super classic shell with jazz fest strainer and butt plate.
You of course, make some valid points.
Used my Super-Classic snare for years without the throw off lever because it was sheared off. Replaced it a few years ago with a 60's type baseball bat lever. (could not find the original fluted type, but it fits and works great)
I guess it is really a matter of perspective. You are dealing with numerous sets, so I can see where it would be an issue dealing with the various versions of them.
I only have the one set, my exposure is much simpler. So I never saw those points as problems, just "differences"
As an aside... Big hole? I can see only 2 screw holes for the strainer. (Perhaps there was yet another variant.)
Thanks,
Nick
My error on the strainer holes, sorry.
