From blairndrums

Ludwig orange color snare string is supposed to be the best....It's $8 or $10 for a good amount...

Yes I bought some.

Live in the states?

From carter

I got a yard of grosgrain ribbon for a buck in the scrap bin at a local fabric store. Works great. I think 3/8" is the right width. Otherwise any string is better than wire. The orange Pearl or Ludwig is good.

And that grosgrain ribbon is used for those "around the neck ID tags" issued at corporate conferences, exhibitions, seminars etc.. I just cut it to lengths and sear the ends..

Cheers

I use either mini-blind cord or a spool of what I believe is string used for plumb-bob's. It's green and INCREDIBLY strong. My days of cranking the snares ended about 30 years ago, so it's mostly about replacing worn-out strings on new acquisitions.

My mother is a professional framer so when I mount my patterson gut snares on various drums I use wire that is used to hang frames .. heavy duty stuff. When it comes to my pure sound snares I always just go with the string it comes with. Maybe shoelace here and there.

While I have no personal experience, I have heard multiple people talking about having damaged wood snare beds with various types of wire for installing snares. Something to at least think about.

I use either a nylon chord, satin chord or hemp chord.

I only use wire to mount wrap around gut snares. The wire doesn't actually touch the shell . You are right though. I would never use wire for standard snares that do NOT wrap around the the bearing edge.
