I'm a cable splicer for AT&T. We utilized a wax coated string called 12-cord. It was used to bind multiple cables long before the invent of zip ties. Excellent string for snare wire. Hit you telephone technician up for some next time you see him/her around.

With 38 snare drums in the house you will find a variety of materials. I know there is at least one with some of that hundred pound test braided line. In addition, venetian blind cord, actual real snare cord, puresound cord, a couple with ribbon, screws and string (Dyna-Sonic), and even plastic straps. No shoe string.

I do prefer string. I think that is a result of being a life long Dyna-Sonic owner. All of my Powertones are with string. As for the plastic straps, they look cheesy.

Shoestring budget... (chuckle)

redneckdrum: Thanks! I've got a roll of that stuff. I didn't know the name of it and I've had it for at least twenty years. My bet is it's forty years old or older... works GREAT!

tnsquint: You beat me to it, but 'Grosgrain Ribbon' works great and it's free from my wife's sewing stuff! I don't use the pink ribbon, though. :)

I haven't used the Ludwig string in years, since I got the roll of string mentioned above, but I have heard from a lot of folks that it's far superior to the Gibraltar.

I got a yard of grosgrain ribbon for a buck in the scrap bin at a local fabric store. Works great. I think 3/8" is the right width.

Otherwise any string is better than wire. The orange Pearl or Ludwig is good.

I've used Ludwig snare cord for a while. One spool of the stuff is all you'll ever use, unless you collect and play a ginormus collection,or do drum repair, then mini blind nylon cord is will work great and it's dirt cheap.

It comes in several thicknesses .9mm,1.2mm,1.8mm and in around a dozen different colors. The 1.2mm stuff is around a buck a yard.

Just use a square knot or surgeons knot when tying it and not some granny knot, and whip/seal the ends with a match or lighter.
