Never judge a book by its cover Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Browsing my local CL and came across a CB-700 frankenstein kit. Didn't have a price tag on it so I decided to pass. Then I noticed the bass drum lugs and badge, not all that apparent when looking at the thumbnails. A closer inspection reveals a 1940's Ludwig & Ludwig Bass drum with imperial lugs, these keywords were NOT in the item description.

Called the seller, worked out a price, and brought everything home.

Got home, turned the bass drum upsidedown and BAM! White marine pearl on the bottom, someone sprayed the bass drum and didn't bother to spray the bottom. and the CB-700's? Also sprayed, turns out a nice blue sparkle wrap underneath!

All in all a good day, bass drum does have extra holes however, killed my moment...

WOOT!

Nice score, and vintage CB700s aren't half bad.

The title should be, "Never judge a DRUM by its cover!"

There was one of these on CL in Portland, too, for fairly cheap, black CB700 toms, no floor tom, but they said Ludwig and Ludwig bass drum in the ad description. The bass drum was drilled for a tom mount, too. I called, wondering if it was a 26" or 28" bass drum, but it was only a 24" drum. He wanted $140 for the lot, and wouldn't budge on the price, so I passed. Totally not worth it. Glad that you found one you like!

That was the same seller. I called him before he updated the listing. After I called he changed the listing to Ludwig and Ludwig. It seemed that he knew it was a vintage ludwig the whole time, but never included the key terms in the listing. I got the lot for about half that. He said the circumstances changed and he needed them out asap, something about painting the garage. Super nice guy too, had them all ready to go when I got there.

Congrats!

Yeah, on the phone he didn't seem very nice, which was the other half of my "it's not worth it" justification. I probably just caught him at an off moment.

Glad to see a fellow forum member from Portland!

West side!

I attend PSU right now but anytime I have a moment its back to the drum corner! And its possible we've met before, I picked up quite a few drums locally.
