I have always heard that buzz is caused by one or more wires not being tight enough on the reso head. Make sure all the wires are tight when engaged.
Hmm...that's a new one. The snare wires are real old, and not in that great of shape. I'll look closely for any bent or loose wires. Probably should just get some new shiny ones, maybe those puresound enforcers that John mentioned.

Tinman makes a good point. After a while the snares will begin to stretch and it is probably statistically impossible for them all to stretch equally. When that happens, the snares begin to sound loose because "some" of the are. You tighten the strainer to tension the loose strands while at the same time you are choking the drum with the strands that are not loose. If you find that you either have the option of loose sounding snares or choking, this is probably the problem.
I like the equalizer series as well as I often prefer a little less snare sound.

Equalizer (not enforcerLame) ordered. New hazy 300 for good measure too. I'm not too fond of the Slingerland strainer. Any suggestions for a better functioning replacement?
